Departmental Overview

For 100 years, Berkeley Optometry & Vision Science, one of the world's leading schools of optometry, has produced groundbreaking research, clinical excellence, and unparalleled education. It offers a rigorous four-year professional program leading to the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, a one-year residency program in advanced clinical optometry, and one of the largest and most highly rated vision science PhD programs. The School is known for its exceptional faculty, commitment to clinical training, and rigorous academic curriculum. Berkeley Optometry & Vision Science is also a major center for vision science research. The school recently received a $50 million transformational gift from the doctor. Herbert Wertheim Family Foundation, the largest gift ever received by a school of optometry in the country. This commitment constitutes the lead gift for a 10-year, $100 million investment that will expand the School's ability to train the next generation of optometric physicians, educators, and scientists to serve as leaders in the primary and preventative health care spectrum and vision science.

Responsibilities

Alumni Engagement and Partners in Education (40%):

• Contribute to a department-wide effort of engaging alumni, donors, and friends; developing programming, increasing volunteer involvement, and unrestricted giving (Annual Fund).

• In collaboration with the Events Manager, oversee planning, coordination, and execution of all alumni/donor engagement events, including Reunion Celebration, Academy, Optometry's Meeting, and other regional, shared interest, and campus alumni programs and activities.

• Designs, organizes, and implements special initiatives and has direct interaction with the alumni board, alumni, and other donors.

• Coordinate other fundraising events, including delivery of corporate partnership programs (Partners in Education) and other deliverables

• In conjunction with the Special Events Manager, the Director of AE will manage the Events Manager's planning and execution of alumni and corporate events logistics, including securing venue and speakers, coordinating guest lists and RSVPs, working with Facilities, Catering, other vendors, and other event coordination as needed.

• Working with the DAR team, provide input into the design and organization and provide strategic direction for a variety of engagement and stewardship events.

• In conjunction with the Assistant Dean and the Dean, manage and staff the alumni board meeting, including scheduling, sending agendas, and meeting notes.

• Plan, schedule, and implement messaging and communications for the alumni community.

Unrestricted Giving/Annual Fund (40%):

• Plan, schedule, and implement the Annual Fund Program, including specific fundraising. initiatives such as Leadership Circle, Big Give, etc.

• Manage Leadership Circle Society through continued engagement and stewardship

• Track and measure Annual Fund performance metrics and ensure that predetermined fundraising and alumni relations goals are met.

• Identify, cultivate, solicit, and/or steward Annual Fund donors, alumni, and friends.

• Manage all efforts related to Reunion Class giving programs, including identifying, recruiting, and supporting reunion volunteers and creating and implementing strategies and tactics to reach reunion giving and participation goals.

• Provide ROI analysis and information on complex results or activities, and make recommendations to senior leadership for program changes or improvements.

• Participate in short and long-range strategic planning and prepare the Annual Fund and Alumni Relations annual budget.

• Assist in detailed planning of fund development and annual solicitation programs and utilize the CADS database to support these strategies and plans.

• Work directly with the campus Direct Response Marketing (DRM) team to coordinate and manage DRM fundraising appeals such as the Dean's appeal, end-of- year mailing, etc.

• Develop and maintain alumni relations and annual fund calendar.

• Work with campus partners to develop crowdfunding initiatives using fundraising platforms to create campaigns to increase student, staff, and alumni participation.

• Develop text communications for event reminders and appeals.

DEI Alumni Program (10%):

• Expand the depth and scope of DEI programming, events, and engagement opportunities for our alumni community.

• In coordination with ASAO and DEI Director and Council, develop meaningful volunteer opportunities, programming, and initiatives that connect students and alumni around issues of DEI.

• Work with DAR team members to develop philanthropic opportunities and programs focusing on DEI initiatives and alumni engagement.

• Partner with DEI Director and MarComm Director to create constituent and alumni materials that raise the visibility of DEI programs, and resources, and giving opportunities.

• Actively participate in inclusion, diversity, equity, action, and access learning opportunities to support an inclusive, diverse, and engaged alumni community

Volunteer Engagement and Management (10%):

• Manage and staff alumni volunteer program.

• Work with members of the student and alumni community to increase their participation and awareness of and in advancement programs and activities.

• Partner with the Alumni Board in developing programs and initiatives to engage alumni further.

• Assist with the engagement of the Alumni Board and other volunteer leaders, including developing materials for meetings.

• Plan, schedule, and implement messaging and communications for periodic alumni e- newsletters and updates.

Required Qualifications

• Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.

• Thorough working knowledge of and/or ability to learn about the department and its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

• Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.

• Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.

• Strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and project management skills.

• Strong skills in maintaining confidentiality.

Education/Training:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800.00 - $96,560.00.

• This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.

• This position is exempt and paid monthly.

• This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 20% remote capability.
