JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

As the Associate Director for Network Operations, it is crucial to guarantee the smooth functioning and growth of the WPI network. This role involves leading a team to oversee daily engineering activities. While primarily a team leadership role, a comprehensive understanding of network technologies and vendors is essential, along with the capability to carry out more advanced tasks as needed to support the overall department.

This is an on-site position with hybrid possibilities after the first ninety days.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities:

Lead the daily efforts of the Network Operations Team by:

  • Providing escalation support and guidance to the Network Operations team for troubleshooting issues and engineering deployments.

  • Working with the Director, Network Services to maintain and prioritize a daily list of tasks for the team and student Assistants.

  • Identify and lead training efforts to mentor and elevate the Network Operations team and student Assistants.

  • Assist team in authoring and representing network service impacting changes in the weekly Change Advisory Board meeting.

  • Ensuring the internal asset, shipping and receiving tools are maintained for tracking purchases and inventory levels.

  • Work with Director, Network Services to ensure that proper standards are maintained.

  • Work with Director, Network Architecture to coordinate deployment of new and updated networking services.

Coordinate and Plan for tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Life-cycle maintenance and support of WPI network hardware including switches, routers, wireless access points, and other communications hardware.

  • Support of data center and network closet environment, power and monitoring including UPS battery backup systems.

  • Provide connectivity for users of the data network including patch panel adds/moves/changes.

  • Support physical plant additions, renovations and documentation as they relate to the fiber optic, voice, and data infrastructure.

Foster Collaborative WPI IT-wide relationships by:

  • Maintaining a working knowledge of virtualization and cloud technologies to support various projects and systems.

  • Coordinating with Systems Operations and ARC/Linux Operations to provide network support.

  • Working with Service Desk and other user-facing IT teams as needed to improve end-user documentation and support.

  • Working with Director, Network Services and DevOps Engineers to design appropriate tools to encourage end-user self-service.

Assist the Directors of Network Services and Network Architect by:

  • Evaluating emergent technologies, firmware and code maintenance releases for all provided services.

  • Participating in internal Network Design Review and Architecture Review Board sessions

  • Collaborate with the building and maintaining an accurate 10-year networking equipment and services budget.

  • Develop and Deploy proof-of-concept configurations to support Network Architecture changes.

  • Contribute feedback in the planning of the Network Services Roadmap

  • Contribute to the composition and preparation of network documentation standards and other reports.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field in order to provide the necessary understanding of network technology; comparable experience or certification may be considered.

  • 5-10 years relevant experience in Network Operations/Engineering.
