Our Production Systems (MPS) is an integrated production system for how we design, manage, and continuously improve our operations and supporting business processes, enabled through the development of our people. The MMD (Merck Manufacturing Division) MPS Team is responsible for driving MPS throughout the organization to enable change in the operating systems, management systems, and mindsets, behaviors and capabilities of our people to produce product at the highest quality, for the lowest cost, and in the shortest lead time.

Under the direction of the Global Vaccines MPS Director, with work leaders and sites in Global Vaccines Operations. Approximately 50% of the time will be spent on the floor providing direct, hands on support of activities, while 25% will be spent coaching leaders within Global Vaccines. Due to the nature of the work and diversity of sites, expected travel will be 50-75%.

MMD MPS Associate Director Description of Duties:

  • Partner with and consult functional leaders, plant managers and their leadership teams to develop plans and execute performance improvement activities.

  • Influence and link improvement objectives to the highest division priorities

  • Develop Lean management and people development processes and plans

  • Manage end-to-end vaccines processes and projects to drive results and realize intended business benefit

  • Utilize various Lean and Six Sigma tools and techniques in conjunction with the House of MPS to diagnose, analyze and improve business processes

  • Provide teaching and coaching to effectively transfer Lean skills into the organization for the development of Lean Leaders

MMD MPS Associate Director Responsibilities & Capabilities:

  • Provide guidance for Merck's structure and operations and identify key business opportunities through utilizing financial data and industry knowledge and trends.

  • Proactively recognize and mitigate barriers to cross-functional initiatives and can act as an intermediary across divisional, geographical, and cultural boundaries.

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and challenging the status quo, while driving departmental/regional strategies that align with Merck's long term strategy.

  • Manage teams to mitigate risk, allocate resources, and drive on time completion of initiatives.

  • Mentor others on effective communication and active listening techniques to fuller understand client/customer needs and expectations.

  • Lead value deep process analysis through value stream mapping to measure stagnation of inventory and information and can lead kaizen to increase capacity and improve process performance.

  • Develop visual controls and framework to make problems visible and responds with urgency to effectively break down complex problems, lead root cause analysis, and develop effective countermeasures.

  • Lead and coach kaizen with a team to achieve multiple target conditions to achieve an overall challenge.

  • Lead kaizen to improve standardized work.

  • Can design balanced work to takt time, with smooth flow and leads kaizen to reduce lead time, inventory, and change-over time.

  • Apply scientific method problem solving methodology (8-step) to solve complex problems with multiple independent variables.

  • Able to engage sponsor s and clients, lead major changes, and effectively coach senior leaders and E2E/IPT Managers.

  • Build trust and develop new relationships with internal and external clients to effectively collaborate and achieve successful outcomes at a regional/global.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field and a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience.
Required Experience and

Skills:
  • Lean Experience

  • Experience analyzing complex end-to-end supply chains and driving process improvement

  • Hands-on application of Lean tools and techniques: standardized work, scientific problem solving, value stream mapping, mistake proofing, SMED, 5S-Visual Factory

  • Experience applying consultative skills: ability to influence decision making, ability to interact with all levels of the business (senior leaders to shop floor working teams), project management skills (demonstrated experience in managing large teams), solid business acumen, proven team building skills, exceptionally good listening skills, results oriented, strong analytical skills, and prior process improvement experience.

  • Coaching, Teaching, and driving a High Performance Organization. Proven experience in coaching and teaching others to think, behave and apply lean methods and tools. Experience enabling and leveraging diverse perspectives, talents, etc. to achieve business outcomes.

Preferred Experience and

Skills:
  • Extensive Lean application experience, deep understanding and successful application of a continuous improvement system, such as The Toyota or Merck Production Systems).

  • Excellent skills using IT applications to organize and analyze data.

  • Experience in operations management, manufacturing, or related disciplines.

  • Experience in a Vaccines or Sterile pharmaceutical environment.

  • Secondary degree in supply chain or business administration

The Associate Director may manage a team of 2 to 4 individual contributors in support of project execution. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Regulatory Responsibilities: * Serve as the CMC Product Lead for assigned products and be accountable for the delivery of all regulatory milestones for assigned products through the product lifecycle. * Lead development and execution of global product and project regulatory strategy(ies) by ensuring robust assessment of CMC changes, identification of global regulatory requirements and critical evaluation of supporting documentation to confirm acceptability and identification of potential risks. * Execute regulatory strategies by leading the development, authoring and review of CMC submission components and documentation to support post-approval supplements, annual reports, registration renewals and responses to health authority questions per established business processes and systems. * Provide regulatory leadership as needed to product in-license/due diligence review, product divestment and product withdrawal. * Collaborate with our manufacturing division and external partners to support compliant execution of change management and conduct all activities with an unwavering focus on regulatory conformance. * Manage execution of CMC documentation including post-approval supplements, annual reports, registration renewals and responses to health authority questions per established business processes and systems. * Demonstrate an understanding of regulatory affairs and apply this understanding to the benefit of the company to ensure approval and Product supply continuity. * Assess and communicate potential regulatory risks and propose mitigation strategies. * Deliver all regulatory milestones for assigned products across the product lifecycle * Identify, communicate and escalate potential regulatory issues to GRACS CMC management, as needed Qualifications Education Minimum Requirement: * B.S. in a science, engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred). Fields of study include Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry. * At least five (5) years of relevant experience, including biological/pharmaceutical research; manufacturing, analytical testing; or related fields. * The candidate must be proficient in English; additional language skills are a plus.
