Position Summary

Global Finance Business Services (GFBS) provides global financial services that facilitate business operations, controls, and compliance for the Alexion organization. This position will be the Global Process Owner for Record to Report and Controls and Compliance.

This role will lead the definition of the global record to report, controls and compliance process design, the service delivery model and the process roadmap liaising directly with Controllership, IT, Compliance, Internal Audit, Business Development and other relevant stakeholders across the Company in support of Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. business objectives.

This role will have operational ownership for specific activities performed by our managed service provider (MSP) specifically related to accounting activities (i.e. journal entries & reconciliations). This includes providing operational direction, support and leadership to the MSP teams. This role will also lead Strategic Projects for GFBS such as Business Development Efforts (Acquisition integration, deal day payments, etc.), continuous improvement and large-scale transformational initiatives.

Principal Responsibilities

Record to Report

  • Lead the definition of the RTR global process design, the service delivery model and the process roadmap with regards to people, process and technology, looking broadly to design one global standard

  • Support the oversight of the services delivered by our managed service provider (Genpact) in order to ensure agreed upon outcomes and customer requirements are met

  • Define polices / procedures related to the RTR operational processes (i.e. chart of accounts, reconciliations) and train/educated team members

  • Oversight and execution of consolidated close controls / processes, including defining / communicating close timelines, monitoring close status and ensuring completion of all required activities / controls

  • Serve as the Blackline subject matter expert, responsible for optimizing the use of the system providing training; maintenance of account ownership (quarterly certification process) within Blackline and account reconciliation periodic review and monitoring

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive closing checklist

Controls & Compliance

  • Act as the Finance Business Partner for the Alexion Internal Audit and Compliance Functions; responsible for assisting in the development, execution and continuous improvement of the Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. controls & compliance program to ensure compliance with all applicable standards, laws, and regulations, including without limitation the U.S. Anti-Kickback Statutes, the False Claims Act, the Stark Laws, the Sunshine Act, FCPA, HCP and Transparency Reporting

  • Lead the GFBS organization and its outsourced partners in development of a robust internal control environment and financial accounting practices to ensure accuracy, timeliness and completeness of financial information in delivery of GFBS services

  • Coach Global Process Owners to implement and/or strengthen controls within their respective processes

  • Establish governance models

  • For controls monitoring & attestation within outsourced operations

  • To ensure all GFBS policies and procedures are maintained and updated according to business need and/or Alexion guidelines

  • For GFBS Business Continuity, ensuring that procedures exist and are regularly updated and tested

  • Provide trusted controllership advice across the GFBS organization in conjunction with other control & compliance functions across Alexion

  • Ensure GFBS financial management processes, procedures and reporting comply with regulatory requirements and best practices; Accountable for defining the performance metrics to be measured for the processes. Set performance targets working with the GFBS Service Delivery Leaders

  • Own SAP ECC and BI/BPC overall access controls administration partnering with IT SAP security team.

Business Development

  • Provide GFBS overall scope leadership to BD deal teams.

  • Lead acquisition integration planning and execution to facilitate deal integration into our standard business processes.

  • Lead deal integration coordination with all GFBS scope areas and with other controllership teams to insure the business continues to operate on 'day-1' insuring books and records are accurate and well controlled.

  • Lead legacy process/system wind-down planning and execution per agreed timeline.

Continuous Improvement Initiatives

  • Accountable for identifying and delivering continuous improvement opportunities that transform and streamline the end-to-end Compliance processes and drive efficiencies and/or higher performance levels

  • Develop process expertise in the organization; promote the identification of process opportunities or improvement possibilities and generate innovation within the service lines

  • Work with the Service Delivery teams understand the root cause of the service issues in order to resolve process related escalations and identify continuous improvement and transformation opportunities from a delivery / service perspective

  • Identify process technology requirements and drive a simplified yet effective Technology landscape with the support of IT

  • Draw on the external industry practice and latest third party / supplier thinking; compare Alexion performance with external industry benchmarks to understand where opportunities exist

  • Review internal process benchmarks and share internal best practices across Alexion to understand areas for improvement

  • Monitor and track effects of continuous improvement initiatives to ensure benefits are being realized

Stakeholder Management

  • Lead, or represent Finance in, a range of cross-functional discussions and collaborations with internal stakeholders, including those from Legal, Finance, and Compliance, etc.

  • Manage / coordinate strategic projects, both independently and in partnership with the other functions, working with, and occasionally directing the efforts of, outside counsel, vendors and consultants; at least initially, projects likely will focus on the exploration of existing or emerging technologies that both enhance the Company's ongoing reviews and promote operational efficiencies

  • Build and lead an internal team, with a focus on developing talent, as the Compliance function continues to grow and evolve

  • Act as the Champion for major investments and improvement initiatives in the process, communicating changes with relevant stakeholders

People Management and Supervisory

  • Lead a highly capable team through the ongoing attraction, development and retention of skilled financial professionals

  • Responsible for direct supervision and development for a team of 4 in addition to the oversight of the services delivered by our managed service provider

  • Ability to motivate, lead and teach team members in order to produce high quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects


  • Minimum of 10 years of progressing work experience within finance

  • Ability to see broadly and understand strategic changes and effectively translate that into necessary process or technology changes needed to support the needs of the business

  • Experience in multinational company

  • Experience in managing global processes and teams in a shared service environment

  • Strong communication, relationship building, presentation and interpersonal skills required.

  • Strong leadership, customer service and organizational skills required

  • Knowledge of US GAAP and SOX

  • Self-directed, self-motivated leader

  • SAP Experience preferred

  • CPA strongly preferred


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; MBA is preferred
