The mission of The Center for Black Entrepreneurship is to create a well-equipped cohort of Black entrepreneurs with skills and talents to better navigate the gap between entrepreneurs and capital and commercial markets. Additionally, the CBE wants to instill entrepreneurial thinking in all students at Spelman College and Morehouse College and to create a community of business practitioners with a lifelong commitment to achieving social and economic progress through innovation. The CBE approach to developing the entrepreneurial mindset is broad and encompasses both the undergraduate minor (across both campuses) and an online offering for adult learners. For students interested in launching or investing in ventures, the CBE offers a suite of co-curricular programs, events, and other resources including fellowships.

The Academic Director leads several key functions within the program, including coordination of curriculum development, evaluation, and assessment; integration of curricular and co-curricular programs; support of student scholarship, research, or creative activities; and management of budgets and other resources. Must be able to work independently and under pressure, managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. The Academic Director reports to the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree and/or its equivalent required.

  • Minimum 3 years related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in innovation & entrepreneurship ecosystem, e.g. incubators, accelerators, advisory services, etc.

  • Prior mentorship experience with student groups

  • Demonstrated commitment to DEI

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Ph.D. or advanced business degree with understanding change management principles.

  • Ability to engage faculty and staff as colleagues, provide clear explanations and rationales for actions, connect program actions with divisional and College goals, navigate challenging interpersonal dynamics involving College employees and students, hold colleagues and oneself accountable to the Morehouse mission, and maintain a positive work environment for self and others.

  • Strong written, visual, and oral communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving ability with sound judgment within appropriate Academic Affairs and College policy parameters.

  • Proficiency in synthesizing and presenting information in a concise and transparent manner to faculty, staff, and students.

  • High level of discretion, ability to maintain high level of confidentiality, and work with restricted-access data or information.

  • General interest in and eagerness to learn about the startup/investor ecosystem and culture.

Physical Demands

  • No or very limited physical effort required.

  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

  • Must be flexible to meet occasionally during evenings and work may be required frequently during weekends.

  • Local and other travel may be required occasionally

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Responsiblities

  • Promote student learning by working closely with the Executive Director, and in conjunction with the Chair of Economics at Spelman College and the Dean of Business and Economics at Morehouse College, to implement curriculum strategy and development, and assist in the planning and supporting of courses and faculty as needed.

  • Facilitate program decision making processes by convening the CBE Academic Working Group and associated meetings.

  • Contribute to Institutional and Disciplinary Accreditation efforts by tracking success and outcomes on courses, and other educational programs, including post-course surveys, and suggests interventions based on feedback.

  • Act as the student-facing representative of the program by responding to student inquiries and other matters that would impart a better understanding of the program.

  • Teaches 3 Entrepreneurship minor courses per year.

  • Working with key team members, assists with co-curricular programs for students and alumni, overseeing the timely execution and successful implementation of program components.

  • Working with key team members, supports communication platforms such as social media, CBE website, and other printed collateral, helping with the Center's marketing and content strategy.

  • Contributes as a pro-active team member to additional projects with other staff as needed including Advancement and Career Services.

  • Performs additional tasks as assigned.
