Associate Director For Substance Use And Recovery Services

The University of Virginia is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to serve as the Associate Director for Substance Use and Recovery Services. This position is housed in the Department of Student Health and Wellness and reports to the Director for Wellbeing. The Associate Director plays a pivotal role in leading the Substance Use Consultation and Treatment Team and contributing to outreach, prevention, and recovery efforts within the university community. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of substance use regulations in higher education, possess expertise in substance use treatment and recovery, and demonstrate strong leadership and managerial skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Offer consultation and supervision to staff focused on substance use treatment, recovery, and prevention services.

• Lead the Substance Use Consultation and Treatment Team in providing comprehensive services to students struggling with substance use concerns.

• Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and initiatives aimed at outreach, prevention, early intervention, and recovery support.

• Collaborate with other University departments and community organizations to enhance resources and support for students.

• Engage with interdisciplinary teams and community partners to address substance use concerns.

• Stay updated on evidence-based practices and emerging trends in substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery.

• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university regulations regarding substance use.

• Stay informed about relevant laws, policies, and best practices in higher education.

• Collaborate with university leadership to develop and implement policies that promote a safe and supportive campus environment.

• Author Biennial Review of UVA's Alcohol and Other Drug programs and policies.

• Oversee online required alcohol education module.

• Support efforts to manage and expand on-Grounds Recovery Housing for students in recovery.

• Provide training and education to staff, students, and other University stakeholders on substance use prevention, harm reduction, and recovery.

• Develop and facilitate workshops, seminars, and educational programs on relevant topics.

• Supervise professional staff, and possibly some student workers or interns.

• As relevant, provide direct services to students, including assessment, counseling, and referral to appropriate resources.

• Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's or doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, public health, or a related field.

• Minimum of three years of experience in substance use prevention, treatment, or recovery services, preferably in a higher education setting.

• Strong understanding of substance use regulations, policies, and best practices in higher education.

• At least two years' experience in leadership, supervision, and team management.

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic environment.

• Experience working with diverse populations, including students from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds.

• Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education in the field of substance use and recovery services.

• Knowledge of motivational interviewing and its application in early intervention and substance use treatment settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Active clinical license (e.g., LPC, LCSW, LMFT) in the state of Virginia or the ability to gain licensure in Virginia before hire.

• Experience managing budgets and writing grants to secure funding for substance use and recovery programs.

• Demonstrated ability to conduct research, analyze data, and utilize findings to inform program development and improvement.

• Certification in substance use treatment or recovery (e.g., Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, Certified Recovery Specialist).

Physical Demands:

Job requires repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check and health and drug screen. This is an exempt-level position with UVa benefits. Employees' benefits package highlights include:
