Associate Director, Financial Planning & Analysis

This position is a hybrid role with 2-3 days a week onsite and can be based out of our San Diego or Pasadena, CA locations.

Summary:

Responsible for providing comprehensive strategic and operational financial support and insights to optimize performance, reinforce strategic planning, and facilitate informed business decisions.

Job Duties:

Planning and budgeting

  • Drives long-range plan development, enabling leadership to shape the strategic outlook for the organization

  • Forecasts operating expenses, headcount, and CapEx by program and department

  • Manages and improves various enterprise and program cost models to inform long-range planning, valuations, and new business opportunities

  • Consolidates corporate planning and budgeting financial reporting

  • Functions as financial business partner to G&A leadership, and other departments, as appropriate

  • Contributes to strategic planning by providing insights and recommendations to improve processes, reduce costs, and enhance overall performance.

Analytics and decision support

  • Manages, builds, and improves program and departmental reporting packages that provide actionable insights to stakeholders and help support decision making

  • Facilitates the periodic financial results review with applicable partners to ensure awareness of financial performance and identification of risk and opportunities

  • Manages internal resource planning models and ensures completeness and accuracy

  • Conducts scenario analyses, partnering with key stakeholder across the business

  • Reviews and tracks cash balance, highlighting risks and opportunities

  • Supports requests for ad-hoc analysis / reports to finance, senior management, accounting, external partners, and other key stakeholders

Systems and modeling

  • Oversees financial planning system and processes as the internal system administrator

  • Develops and manages roadmap for FP&A system / processes and align with corporate priorities and needs

Other Finance duties

  • Supports potential business development assessments and valuation initiatives

  • Manages tracking and reporting of potential sales and / or development milestones

  • Provides ad hoc audit support for in-scope controls and reviews

  • Complies with Company policies, standard operating procedures, operating guidelines, and other written instructions

  • Drives development of meaningful financial analyses and creates effective presentations to communicate conclusions and recommendations to senior leadership

  • Drives development and implementation of key process improvement initiatives

  • Proactively engages with Finance colleagues and business partners to develop process improvements to planning, analyses, and reporting

  • Adheres to all department and company-wide policies regarding conduct, performance, and procedures

  • Provides oversight and direction to direct and indirect reports, as applicable, in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures. The responsibilities may include, but are not limited to recruiting, training, communicating job expectations, appraising and managing job performance, delivering feedback and coaching, and providing career development planning and opportunities

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Skills:

Position requires a BS in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or relevant field, and at least 10 years relevant financial analysis experience; an MBA or Master's degree with at least 8 years' experience is preferred. Experience with project reporting, operational accounting and reporting, and advanced MS Office experience is also required. Requires in depth experience utilizing financial concepts, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Experience in the biotech, pharmaceutical industry, or clinical research organization preferred. Prior experience and expertise working with Netsuite PBCS (or similar), PowerBI, Excel/VBA also preferred

Position also requires:

  • Effective leadership and working skill in teamwork, delegation, organization, and coordination

  • Judgement, initiative, and ability to deal with complex ideas and relationships while exercising discretion with confidential information

  • Strong understanding of technical accounting principles

  • Ability to multi-task, work well under pressure, and prioritize

  • Ability to build strong relationships with Finance and non-Finance business partners

  • Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to actively manage the execution of projects that involve cross-functional stakeholders

  • Thorough understanding of clinical trials, drug development, Phase I through Phase III

  • Outstanding flexibility and adaptability suited for the changing requirements and fast pace of a small biotechnology company

  • Knowledge of US GAAP and SOX principles

  • Ability to demonstrate competencies applicable for job based on Xencor's Leadership Competency Model.

Occasional travel may be required, including travel between Xencor's Pasadena and San Diego offices. Work for this position is generally performed at Xencor's worksite and requires full-time commitment.

Expected Base Salary Range: $xx,xxx - $xx,xxx

The actual salary will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, including skills, competencies, education and experience.
