As a specialist in the Center for Career Engagement and Opportunity (CEO), the Associate Director for Fellowships and Scholarships is responsible for recruiting, coaching, mentoring, and advising all New College students exploring and pursuing prestigious national and international scholarships and fellowships. Targeted awards include, but are not limited to, the Fulbright US Student Program, Goldwater, Gilman, Critical Language Scholarship, Boren Awards, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs), Pickering, Rangel, Payne, Truman, and Hollings. Through keen attention to detail and leveraging a well-informed understanding of the expectations, selection criteria, and application processes, this position advises student applicants and their faculty supporters, provides actionable feedback, and solicits student work product of the highest quality, to engage, motivate, and guide students through all phases of the application process. This position maintains databases that track and record participants, advising, active applicants, and applicant outcomes. Reporting to the Dean of Career Success and Experiential Learning, the Associate Director is a member of the Career Success and Experiential Learning leadership team within the Academic Affairs division that aims to prepare all students for their future through coordinated efforts to develop professional early career pathways and scale career readiness. The position directly leads the College's efforts to ensure all students explore competitive fellowships and scholarships as part of their academic and career planning.

Examples of Duties

Fellowships & Scholarship Program Leadership & Award Promotion

  • Leads all aspects of the College's Fellowships & Scholarship Program including identifying, developing, and promoting scholarship/fellowship opportunities and New College timelines for targeted scholarship/fellowship programs

  • Manages procedures for College's nomination and submission of applicants for competitive prestigious scholarship/fellowship programs

  • Develops and implements strategies to integrate fellowships/scholarships into the academic program

  • Collaborates with Dean and Career Success leadership team on the development of program strategic goals, priorities, and plans

Student Advising, Coaching, & Teaching

  • Advises students pursuing scholarships/fellowships determining eligibility and competitiveness

  • Coaches active applicants on the development of competitive applications

  • Prepares students interested in pursuing awards to develop a competitive profile and portfolio

  • Meets with students individually and in groups (e.g., class presentations, info sessions) to promote scholarship exploration

  • Drafts institutional letters of nomination and recommendation processes as needed

  • Teaches a grant writing tutorial/course as needed

Faculty & Campus Collaboration

  • Collaborates with career coaches and faculty advisors to connect students with scholarship/fellowship opportunities relevant to their academic and professional aspirations

  • Maintains contact with faculty to recruit a diverse applicant pool for targeted awards reflecting the breadth of New College's students' identities and academic and professional interests

  • Advises faculty on letters of recommendation process as needed

  • Convenes and facilitates faculty nomination/preparation/selection committees as needed

  • Assists with campus-wide efforts to develop professional pathways and scale student career readiness as part of the Academic Affairs Career & Experiential Learning leadership team.

Undergraduate Research Grant Program Administration

  • Coordinates the Student Research and Travel Grant, the College's undergraduate research grant program, including facilitating promotion, student advisement, nomination, selection and award process

  • Collaborates with grants selection committee (alumni and faculty) and Dean on program administration including program policies and award criteria

  • Structures program as a student learning process and provides feedback to students on how to improve their grant writing skills

Administration, Report Writing, & Supervision

  • Maintains advising notes in a centralized database (i.e., Handshake)

  • Develops and maintains databases of student participation, application processes, and student success

  • Maintains an online scholarship database

  • Writes reports to leadership on program participation and success of applicants

  • Develops and maintains webpages and advising resources

  • Assists with inputting first-destination records to track early career outcomes

  • Supports program fundraising efforts in collaboration with Dean and Foundation

  • Coordinates GPA proxy process in collaboration with Provost's Office

  • Collaborates with Office of Communications & Marketing and Provost's Office to publicize award finalists

  • Supervises student or part-time staff

Communication with External Scholarship Agencies & Prospective Students

  • Maintains communication with award representatives and agencies and educates on New College's academic program, coordinating campus visits as needed

  • Assists admissions office with outreach to prospective students and families exploring competitive awards; participates in admissions events

Continuing Education & Engagement with the Profession

  • Promotes the highest standards and ethics in accordance with national best practices provided by the National Association of Fellowships Advisors (NAFA)
  • Demonstrates a commitment to advancing skills by maintaining membership and engagement with relevant literature, research, books, articles, trainings, conferences, and professional associations

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience or a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience. Proficient writing and editing skills. Demonstrated experience providing individual advice to college students.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree and three years of full-time work in higher education providing direct student advising, preferably in liberal arts or honors education. Preference given for experience as a fellowships administrator or advisor, a fellowship or competitive external grant recipient, or other directly related experience. Proficient with technology including student information databases and learning management systems (Canvas). Demonstrated success with public speaking, teaching, collaborating with faculty, and establishing relationships with external entities.
