Sangamo Product Development and Management Group is responsible for providing best-in-class project leadership practices to optimize Core Team and Sub-Team execution of planning, teamwork, decision-making and communication. The Group is committed to leading the development and execution of high-quality clinical development strategies that enable the achievement of corporate goals.

The position in Development Program Leadership is a highly visible leadership role for seasoned, strategic leaders with a proven track record in leading successful project teams responsible for the development of investigational therapies. The PL is expected to play a pivotal role in setting the strategy and direction for the Core Team as well as managing co-development and interactions with a Big Pharma partner. The successful candidate will demonstrate mastery in key core competencies around leadership and teamwork, communication, problem solving and decision-making, and conflict resolution. This individual is able to hold accountability for sound decisions through their mastery of essential technical content around drug development, study design, and therapeutic areas.


  • Leads and drives Core Teams and Project Teams, and partner interactions and is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the Team and managing the execution and operational aspects of the project, including the development of Product Development Plans, tactical implementation plans, integrated project timelines, monitoring key milestones and decisions points in order to drive project goals and objectives.

  • Interfaces with functional area representatives as well as groups to ensure timely execution of project activities, including anticipating and identifying project risks, mitigations, and contingencies as well as supporting timely action plans and issue resolution.

  • Represents the Core Team; ensures that the Product Development strategy is appropriately supported and aligned with the Target Product Profile (TPP); ensures key strategic decisions and recommendations are thoroughly vetted by Senior Leadership

  • Drive dissemination of accurate and comprehensive information up and down the organization to influence appropriate outcomes and achieve goals

  • Monitor and communicate any decisions, proposed changes or recommendations that have a significant impact to deliverables, timelines and/or approach to the appropriate cross-functional team members and/or leadership forums

  • Leads the Core Team and partners with functional leaders and project management to development project budgets; closely monitors spend against project budgets; addresses resource capability and capacity needs, develops project scenario planning for decision-making.


  • BS in relevant life sciences discipline. Advanced degree preferred (e.g. M.S., PhD, or MBA, PhD/MBA)

  • 5+ years relevant industry experience in a project management oriented leadership role.

  • Outstanding leadership and management skills with an integrated view of scientific, clinical, and product development issues, and a demonstrated passion for developing new therapies.

  • Ability to lead successfully in a matrix environment, prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, integrate cross-functional issues and balance competing priorities effectively.

  • Solutions-oriented and able to drive effective and sound decision-making.

  • Strong foundation and detailed understanding of drug development principles and process, ranging from early clinical development to late stage clinical development to post-marketing evaluation.

  • Strong grasp of how to build and lead high performance teams.

  • Highly level of mastery of influence management and conflict resolution skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills and ability to effectively engage variety of audiences, including senior management.


  • CNS disease drug development experience preferred but not required

  • Experience in co-development of drugs and managing relationships with big Pharma partners is beneficial

  • Cell and gene therapy experience, all phases, a plus

  • PMP Certification preferred

  • May require travel to our Brisbane, CA office as required for business needs
