The Position:

The Associate Director of Business Development identifies, evaluates, and executes strategic transactions to build the future of Sarepta through Business Development. Sarepta has become the partner of choice for genetic medicine companies globally and we intend to accelerate our already substantial BD activity going forward. The AD searches for and assesses growth opportunities, partners with evaluation and diligence teams, and negotiates transactions. This AD reports to and works closely with the Head of Business Development and may work directly with the Executive Committee on a wide variety of high-visibility initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist in the development of Sarepta's long-term strategic direction including analysis of therapeutic areas beyond Sarepta's current focus; proactively source appropriate opportunities for Sarepta's consideration from academic, literature, trade publications, and meetings.

  • Screen and analyze potential collaboration, license and acquisition opportunities from a scientific/medical, commercial, and strategic perspective.

  • Lead diligence team evaluations of therapeutic drug programs from pre-clinical through clinical stages across the relevant assessment areas: proposed clinical benefit, mechanism, non-clinical data, regulatory strategy, clinical development path, CMC, intellectual property and commercial opportunity.

  • Serve as a liaison to the Research and Development teams, collaborate closely with them in prioritizing internal and external research targets.

  • Work effectively with legal, finance and scientific teams and make business development proposals to senior leadership.

  • As appropriate, pursue and lead negotiations and execute collaboration, license and acquisition agreements.

  • Provide project management oversight to track status of current transactions as well as potential deals; partner with finance to run DCF analyses, project the potential ROI for deals under consideration, and create executive presentations.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Skills Requirements:

  • BS/BA required, MBA a plus, PhD or MD preferred with at least 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in business development, corporate strategy, or search and evaluation within the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.

  • An understanding of drug discovery and development process.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines across multiple transactions.

  • Leadership in managing diligence and negotiation processes.

  • Ability and interest in contributing across the organization; flexibility to accept and contribute to critical projects outside of business development.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills across all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to explain complex strategic initiatives and advanced scientific/medical challenges across a broad audience.

  • Some travel required.

Position Summary ultracurious - Apply your biggest ideas in courageous ways Ultragenyx is seeking a highly motivated individual, reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Business Development and Alliance management, for the role of Senior Director/Director, Business Development and Alliance Management. The person in this new role will be primarily responsible for managing key collaborations with external partners. In addition, the person will support business development activities including search/evaluations, due diligence, and execution of transactions for potential partnership, licensing and/or acquisition deals by Ultragenyx. This role will work with and lead teams comprised of multiple functions, including research, development, manufacturing, commercial, legal and finance in order to effectively manage the alliances. This role will have high visibility across the organization and have influence over corporate strategy. Responsibilities, including but not limited to: * Specifically, the Senior Director/Director, Business Development and Alliance Management will: * Manage the life-cycle of collaborative agreements and partner relationships * Ensure that key partnerships proceed to their goals efficiently, effectively, and in a timely fashion * Operate in "white space" of issues that no one else owns * Leads issue/topic resolution to assist program teams/company for the long-term benefit of the program, alliance and Ultragenyx * Proactively contact prospective partner companies and maintain collegial, ongoing relationships * Manage governance meetings * Execute amendments/agreements as needed to ensure continued success of the program/alliance * Track diligence requirements (financial and non-financial), progress reports and budgets * Support due diligence assessments, negotiations of term sheets and contracts as needed * Effectively communicate to senior management on progress, issues, and status of collaboration programs and alliances Requirements: * MS or PhD and proven experience in the pharmaceutical/ biopharmaceutical industry. * 10 years + experience in biopharmaceutical Development and BD/Alliance management of external programs. * Experience in managing cross-functional teams for preclinical, clinical and commercial stage programs. * Strong understanding of and experience with the clinical and regulatory aspects of specific specialty and/or orphan disease areas.
