As aStatistical Science Director (SSD) you'll play a pivotal role in channelling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients' lives. GMD (Global Medicines Development) drives late-stage development of our innovative pipeline, transforming exciting science into valued new medicines and ensuring patients around the world can access them.

AstraZeneca's vision in Oncologyis to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and haematological cancers. As well as other tumour types, these are being targeted through four key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

AstraZeneca's Biometrics & Information Sciences (B&I) drives good design to generate the data needed for quality decision making. The goal of B&I is to deliver value to the pipeline by excellence in delivery, improving decision making, and engaging and shaping the external environment whilst accessing and implementing innovative solutions. TA Statistics is the group that oversees and delivers all the statistical and programming contribution to design, decision-making, interpretations and communication internally and externally for the TA portfolio of projects and is engaged in shaping the TA external environment.

Statistical Science Director, Oncology

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible in leading the strategic, statistical thinking and contributions to the Development Plans, Regulatory Strategy, Health Technology Assessment and Commercial Presentation for indications/projects within an AZ product team. You will provide leadership to statistical staff on the indications/projects so that all work is carried out with regards to AZ standards and external regulations; through partnership with experts, developing design options and providing high quality decision support to enable the business to make informed decisions; quantifying the benefit, risk, value and uncertainty of the emerging product profile.

You will be holding CRO/Partners accountable for the high quality standards of their deliverables. You will represent AZ and Statistics to Health Authorities and Reimbursement/Payer Organizations for specific projects/indications. You will apply expert skills to investigate, apply novel statistical approaches, for relevant statistical issues and/or regulatory guidance and/or value demonstration. You will mentor/coach and support the education and training of Statistics staff in the technical arena.

Essential Requirements

  • MSc/PhD in Statistics or Mathematics (containing a substantial statistical component) with experience in pharma/healthcare or other relevant area

  • Knowledge of the technical and regulatory requirements related to the role

  • Experience of Development, program design and data analysis and interpretation

  • Experience of regulatory interactions and/or submissions

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong relationships

The Clinical Biostatistics Director/Senior Director and Head of the Oncology Therapeutic Area (TA) is responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of a team in support of clinical development projects. Major Duties and Responsibilities * Provide leadership and long-term vision to the Oncology Y-specific biostatistics group to meet corporate regulatory, scientific and business objectives. Provide operational, strategic, and technical direction to product and project level statisticians with ultimate responsibility for all statistical deliverables within the TA. * Development of Oncology specific analysis methodologies and evaluation/implementation of Oncology specific regulatory guidance. * Development of Oncology specific data and reporting standards. * Provide oversight of the statistical thinking for all aspects of the development process within the Oncology including definition of the target product profile/claim, formulation of go/no-go/futility criteria, evaluation of benefit/risk profile, and development of associated regulatory strategy. * Demonstrate a high degree of knowledge regarding their product(s) and Oncology including knowledge of the underlying disease(s) and potential mechanism(s) of action, current and past data from other drugs for the disease(s), scientific literature reporting mechanistic or clinical trial results and issues related to submission history of related products. * Oversight of statistical sections of Protocol Concept Sheet (PCS), study protocols, Clinical Development Plans (CDPs), and regulatory briefing documents. * Prioritize and manage deliverables provided by internal resources and/or outsourcing partners/providers in support of CSRs and regulatory submissions within a highly dynamic environment. * Develop Oncology specific study design/analysis methodologies and evaluate/implement Oncology specific regulatory guidance to facilitate better decision making and improve business operations. * Innovate at the speed of technology to identify and implement emerging new ways of doing clinical development as appropriate (e.g., leverage digital devices, wearables and their corresponding databases to drive advanced scientific research). * Maintain external awareness and engagement regarding the Clinical Biostatistics and Oncology space. * Effectively coordinate statistical endeavors with outside organizations, CROs and consultants. * Effectively negotiate timelines or competing company priorities among a variety of stakeholders. * Ensure that internal standard procedures and working practice are followed. * Demonstrate talent of managing/directing research staff effectively, executing projects/deliverables efficiently, and maintaining/building a diversified and highly qualified statistical team.
