Davidson College seeks applications for the role of Associate Dean of Students. The Associate Dean will be an accessible campus leader who reports to the Vice President for Student Life & Dean of Students and serves as a member of the Student Life division's leadership team. The Associate Dean will provide leadership and supervision to the following functions: Academic Access & Disability Resources, Case Management, Residence Life, and Student Rights & Responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership in Dean of Students Office and Student Life division. Supervise staff and functional areas in the Student Life division, including Academic Access and Disability Resources, Case Management, Residence Life, and Student Rights & Responsibilities.

Serve as a visible key point of contact for the Dean of Students Office and respond to internal and external inquiries on behalf of the Dean of Students. Supervise Dean of Students Office Program Specialist.

Promoting students' intellectual, personal, and social development. Assist the Vice President for Student Life & Dean of Students with advising Honor Council student leaders and members.

Collaborate with the Vice President/Dean on to convene and facilitate meetings of the Student Conduct Council, which is an advisory body on matters of policy relating to student conduct and disciplinary proceedings. Oversee revisions and timely reviews of the Davidson College Student Handbook and its student-facing policies. Work closely with the Vice President for Student Life and Vice President and General Counsel on annual Student Handbook revisions.

Coordinating student support. Advise students on academic and personal concerns.

Coordinate with other campus leaders and offices to respond to incidents of potential bias, and offer resources to individuals or groups impacted by potential bias incidents. Make appropriate referrals for students in distress. Serve as a point of contact for faculty and parents.

Participate in or oversee efforts to provide support or other interventions to students needing assistance. Participate in or convene behavioral intervention team meetings, incident management meetings, and/or students of concern meetings. Serve on the deans' on-call rotation for crisis response and emergency situations.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Associate Dean should be an experienced leader capable of managing complex situations while maintaining an unwavering commitment to high quality student engagement and service. Additionally, the Associate Dean must possess a sophisticated understanding of today's students and their developmental needs and be equipped to contribute to divisional and institutional efforts at strategic and operational levels.

The successful candidate will demonstrate high standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by collaborative teamwork, initiative, critical thinking, timeliness of follow-through, and good judgment. A graduate degree and at least five years of experience in an educational setting are required. Additional requirements include:

  • Direct professional experience in at least one of the functions overseen by the position (academic access & disability resources, case management, residence life, and student rights and responsibilities); professional experience in more than one of the functions is preferred;

  • Ability to relate effectively to students and to faculty and staff; and to work both independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff and other campus partners; and

  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse backgrounds and areas of academic interests.
