The Merced College Nursing Programs aim to prepare students for careers in health care. The Associate Dean of Nursing provides direct oversight of the Merced College nursing programs in order to promote innovative educational programs to students. In addition, the Associate Dean partners with local health care agencies to aid in the promotion of health care throughout the region and within the Merced Community College District. General Description:

Under the general direction of the Dean of Allied Health and Public Safety, the Associate Dean of Nursing leads, supervises, and oversees all activities in developing, implementing, and managing the nursing programs (RN, LVN, and NA) for the college. The Associate Dean provides direct oversight of the nursing programs; program evaluation; budget management; grant supervision; faculty recruitment, supervision, evaluation and student grievances. The Associate Dean coordinates and facilitates the movement of nursing students through a curriculum that meets the standards of the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), the Education Code of the State of California and the provisions of the Nursing Practice Act. In conjunction with the faculty program leadership (i.e. directors and/or assistant directors), the Associate Dean of Nursing implements, administers, and evaluates allied health and partnership programs as may be recommended. The Associate Dean of Nursing is directly responsible and accountable for ensuring program compliance with state Department of Education standards and maintaining full accreditation through the BRN. The Associate Dean of Nursing prepares annual reports, coordinates development of self-study reports required for continued Board of Registered Nursing approval.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Provide leadership for the various nursing programs, as assigned, maintain program quality, and prepare reports needed for continued approval by their respective agencies.

  • Coordinate with faculty program leadership (i.e. directors and/or assistant directors) in program oversight and leadership.

  • Support faculty in providing a curriculum that meets the requirements mandated by the appropriate agencies and act as a resource for curriculum development and program evaluation.

  • Maintain secure files for faculty, students, curriculum, continuing education courses, and accreditation.

  • Supervise the timely submission of applications for students taking the state licensing exam.

  • Orient, assign and evaluate all nursing faculty and staff. Report changes in faculty positions and recommend persons for faculty and/or staff replacement to appropriate agency.

  • Gather and share statistical data regarding nursing from governmental and non-governmental sources.

  • Review legislation affecting the healthcare professions and implement changes in laws and regulations and communicate changes in State and Federal legislation affecting nursing to the appropriate parties.

  • In coordination with faculty program leadership, facilitate communication between the nursing programs, the area office, and other areas on campus.

  • Assist in resolving staff and/or student problems in the nursing programs.

  • Provide opportunities for in-service and conference attendance including identifying the continuing education needs of nursing professionals.

  • Recruit clinical sites from numerous facilities and prepare and coordinate clinical contracts that continually meet requirements for state regulations.

  • Develop and oversee student recruitment processes including information and orientation sessions.

  • Coordinate and supervise the admission of students into the nursing programs.

  • Develop and implement strategies to support student success.

  • Represent the college as required by the Division Dean, Vice President of Academic Affairs, or the President/Chief Executive Officer.

  • Assist faculty program leadership in maintaining an advisory committee for the nursing programs and serve as the chairperson.

  • Develop and maintain articulation agreements for the nursing programs with higher education institutions, the district high schools, health care agencies and other community organizations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Nursing Practice Act, CA Code of Regulation and Standards of Competent Performance

  • CA BRN and other agencies' approval requirements and standards

  • College-level teaching and learning principles

  • Curriculum development preferably in a community college

  • Coordinating and implementing programs in an educational setting

  • Nursing principles, practices and content

  • Applicable nursing accreditation standards

  • Principles and practices of an associate degree in nursing curriculum

  • Principles of leadership

  • Basic principles and practices of budget preparation and administration

  • Principles and procedures of record keeping

  • Principles of basic report preparation

  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases

  • The use of educational technology for course delivery

  • Best practices in teaching lecture and lab courses

  • Appropriate sections of the Education Code and Title 5

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate multiple activities; design, create, and implement use of resources

  • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures

  • Understand and practice the principles of administration and supervision

  • Assess and evaluate programs and personnel

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing

  • Collaborate with and coordinate groups of individuals while exercising initiative, diplomacy, tact, creativity, and balance

  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action

  • Work in a collegial setting with staff at all levels

  • Research topics, collect data, analyze data and form conclusions

  • Work independently, assume responsibility, and take initiative in carrying out assignments

  • Understand the organization and operation of the District and of clinical facilities as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities

  • Network with statewide nursing programs and identify trends in nursing education and programs

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships between the College, community, and key individuals, and with all persons contacted in the course of work, including colleagues at medical or clinical facilities

  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university that includes coursework in nursing education or administration AND
  • One year of experience in an administrative position AND
  • A minimum of two years teaching experience in pre-or post-licensure nursing programs AND
  • One year of clinical experience with direct patient care AND
  • Candidate must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

License or Certificate:

  • Valid California driver license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date

Desired:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective programs and services in a collegial atmosphere

  • Experience in the integration of curriculum development, program planning, program evaluation and student learning outcomes assessment

  • Completed advanced courses in the field of nursing education, including courses in administration, principles of teaching, supervision, and curriculum planning

  • At least one year in teaching or clinical supervision within the past five years
