Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries are seeking a collaborative, innovative, forward-thinking strategic leader to serve in the role of Associate Dean of Libraries for Public Services.

The Associate Dean (AD) provides senior leadership to guide the efforts of various campus libraries, programs, and services, and is actively involved in shaping and implementing public service aspects of the Libraries' strategic plans and directions. Their duties include steering program development and assessment, as well as allocating resources to advance the Libraries' mission. A key focus of this position will be advancing the teaching, learning, liaison, and outreach services offered by the campus libraries. The AD reports directly to the Dean of Libraries and serves on the Libraries Executive Council, chaired by the Dean. This council comprises other senior library leaders, such as the Associate Deans and senior administrative colleagues.

The Associate Dean of Libraries for Public Services assumes the comprehensive coordination of teaching, learning, liaison, access, outreach, and public spaces and services across all campus libraries. Reporting directly to the Dean and Vice Provost for Libraries, the Associate Dean leads the development, communication, implementation, and evaluation of strategic directions and priorities pertaining to public-facing services provided by the campus libraries. In collaboration with senior library leadership, the Associate Dean participates in re-imagining and realigning library services and organizational structures designed to meet the emerging needs of the campus community. The Associate Dean engages in campus-wide initiatives alongside library governance groups, and works with consortial partners at the regional, state, national, and international levels, to ensure access to vital library services and programs, and to bolster the reputation of campus libraries across the profession.

In terms of service portfolio, the Associate Dean directs the development, programming, operations, and assessment of several campus-wide library services, including teaching and learning, liaison and academic support services, outreach and engagement, reserves operations, reference and information, facilities and space planning, and access services. The Associate Dean directly supervises eight professional staff, and has direct oversight of approximately 75 full-time equivalents (FTE) working across those campus libraries focused on undergraduate services, humanities, social sciences, and science and engineering disciplines. Special Collections, Art, Music, and the Archives report to the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Collections Strategy, while the health sciences, law, education and several special purpose libraries report through the deans of their respective colleges. The Wisconsin Historical Society Library and State Archives is an important campus partner, serving as UW-Madison's North American history library. The Associate Dean leads efforts to coordinate the provision of a coherent user experience across all campus libraries.

Responsibilities:

Serves as a senior academic officer at the institutional level. Plans, directs, and provides administrative, operational, and strategic leadership for one or more recognized academic programs or departments with institutional scope. Represents the academic program regarding strategic planning, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and retention; and ensures the integration and coordination of academic programs and initiatives.

  • 20% Provides leadership for one or more academic programs by establishing strategic direction and setting priorities that align with the academic directives of the Dean, and ensures units effectively carry out duties in a way that best supports the university's initiatives, strategic direction, and academic mission; provides direct supervision of department/program leadership and monitors compliance with laws, regulations, university policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
  • 20% Advises and collaborates with the Dean, Assistant Deans, and/or Office of the Provost on critical issues, represents the functional area of supervision at appropriate meetings and events as requested; and serves on and/or leads various program and/or university committees as directed to address issues
  • 5% Directs on-going assessment and continuous improvement of academic programs and services by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals is met, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs/services
  • 10% Ensures initiatives are effectively using program assessment and data analysis to improve initiatives and strategies, identifies opportunities for improvement, and makes recommendations to the Dean for approval
  • 10% Leads special initiatives and/or academic programs that require senior leadership attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
  • 10% Builds consensus and develops collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gathers input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
  • 15% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 5% Serves on various university review committees, working with a wide range of constituencies including the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership
  • 5% Designs and employs regular cycles of assessment, evaluation, and review to sustain quality of services and programs

Tasks:

  • Provides visionary leadership for the Libraries' teaching, learning, liaison, outreach and patron-facing services, ensuring alignment with the University's mission.

  • Implements and assesses innovative, user-centric library services to enhance patron experience.

  • Aligns personnel and services with University and Libraries' strategic objectives, collaborating with stakeholders across the university and partner institutions.

  • Contributes to planning, policy, budgeting, and personnel management across the libraries.

  • Fosters and sustains an inclusive and welcoming environment for all through the provision of equitable services in support of the university community.

  • Champions a culture of professional development, collaboration and knowledge sharing, fostering a dynamic environment where staff are empowered to excel and innovate in their roles.

  • Supports fundraising and development efforts for the Dean.

  • Represents the Libraries at all levels of the university and with our partners across the Universities of Wisconsin system, the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and beyond.

  • Participates in professional networks and associations, leveraging these connections to stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging service needs.

Master's degree from an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited program or other appropriate advanced degree.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of seven years of relevant experience is required, with at least four years in an academic library setting. This experience should include administrative/managerial responsibilities overseeing librarians engaged in instruction, research, outreach, and/or other public services, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of a research library's role in instruction and research.

  • Proven track record of effectively fostering partnerships and collaborations that leverage the diverse roles libraries can fulfill in addressing the changing needs of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.

  • Evidence of substantial professional engagement and contribution, demonstrating a keen awareness of emerging issues and trends influencing library services and programs.

  • Demonstrated career progression in leadership or managerial positions.

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive working and learning environment where all can flourish, with experience supporting programmatic efforts to engage a broad range of perspectives, backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in implementing library services, spaces, and programs requiring the alignment of resources to meet growing academic and research needs of an institution.

  • Experience building and sustaining campus partnerships and collaborating with faculty to integrate library services and resources to evolving pedagogical practices.

  • Ability to maintain a strong commitment to scholarly engagement and professional service, including presentations, publications, and service on campus-wide, regional, and/or national-level professional organizations.

  • Develops and maintains knowledge of emerging and best practices related to liaison librarianship across disciplines, digital scholarship, student success, and information literacy across the curriculum.

Full Time: 100%

This position requires frequent presence on site, however, the hours are flexible and a hybrid work agreement can be arranged with the Dean's approval.

Work hours are primarily Monday-Friday with occasional nights/weekends required.
