JOB SUMMARY: In conjunction with the Provost, Senior Vice President, and Dean of Academic Affairs, is administratively and operationally responsible for the LECOM at Seton Hill additional location. This includes oversight of Year I and Year II of the curriculum as well as those components of preclinical education that occur in Year III and IV of the curricula. Oversees and directs the administrative, operational, financial, and public relations functions for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) at Seton Hill program.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the leadership of the Dean, and in cooperation with the Assistant Dean of Problem Based Learning and the faculty, oversees the entire Year I and Year II preclinical education program as well as those components of clinical education that occur in Year I and Year II;

  • Supervises the administration and operations of the LECOM at Seton Hill Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Program including the refinement of curriculum, procuring of clinical rotation sites, student recruitment, and recruitment and employment of qualified basic science and clinical faculty;

  • Responsible for the execution of all directives and policies of the Board of Trustees, President, and Senior Vice President and Provost which pertain to the academic and operational affairs of LECOM at Seton Hill;

  • Serves as the liaison between the LECOM at Seton Hill faculty and the Senior Vice President and Provost of LECOM;

  • Contributes to the academic planning and development of LECOM at Seton Hill's curriculum by reviewing course syllabi, course outlines, lecture materials, bibliographies, and other materials related to the courses and laboratories as assigned;

  • Presides at all meetings of the LECOM at Seton Hill faculty;

  • Acts as an ex-officio member of all committees of said faculty;

  • Serves on the planning, governance, and committees of LECOM Erie and LECOM at Seton Hill as assigned by the Vice President and Provost;

  • Is responsible for transmitting promptly all acts and decisions of said faculty and other committee meetings to the President and Vice President and Provost;

  • Be physically present at LECOM at Seton Hill for a minimum 40 hours per week during normal school hours in order to attend to administrative and operational duties and other related duties;

  • Prepare written monthly reports documenting the foregoing activities in a form acceptable to the Senior Vice President and Provost of LECOM Erie;

  • Supervises other faculty members and oversees a variety of other preclinical duties on an as needed basis;

  • Works with Assistant Dean of Problem Based Learning to establish preclinical goals, objectives, and outcome measures to assess student, faculty, and affiliate performance;

  • Travel including overnight travel is required;

  • Spends time reviewing current literature in order to recommend implementation of new and innovative curricular programs to the Provost in order to assure that LECOM maintains a "cutting edge" educational program;

  • Oversees the evaluation and assessment process;

  • Works with the Provost and the other Associate and Assistant Deans to direct the entire LECOM campus program;

  • Helps lead the faculty in the design and definition of the preclinical curriculum and in the development of educational policy consistent with the mission of the Institution;

  • Works to identify, evaluate, counsel, and advise adjunct faculty who teach in the preclinical education curriculum;

  • Responsible for overseeing preclinical education student guidance, mentoring, and counseling;

  • Works with the other Associate and Assistant Deans to evaluate, counsel, and advise faculty in meeting their responsibilities;

  • Prepares and administers the budget for the entire preclinical education area of LECOM at Seton Hill;

  • Develops and initiates in-service and leadership training;

  • Recommends prospective adjunct preclinical faculty to the Provost;

  • Will visit all preclinical sites regularly and as appropriate;

  • Responsible for knowledge of all AOA, AACOM, and MSCHE requirements for accreditation;

  • Teaches and facilitates as requested by the Provost;

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable laws;

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring recommendations, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems;

  • Create PowerPoint presentations and deliver lectures concerning preclinical education and other educational programs on an as needed basis;

  • Participate in educational related scholarly activity/research either as a principle investigator or student mentor as needed;

  • Provide consultation services to other faculty members in regards to preclinical education;

  • Periodically review the preclinical education program and offer suggestions for improvement;

  • Serve on various committees as assigned;

  • Contributes toward specific projects and functions related to the COM;

  • Make sure all post-course evaluations are completed by students and tracked accordingly;

  • Must be able to take direction and receive assignments from the Dean or his/her designee;

  • Faculty member will contribute and be responsible for overall student success, including, but not limited to, advising and student outcomes;

  • Faculty member will contribute directly to the Mission of LECOM embodying the essence of Osteopathic Principles and Practices by assisting with Institutional fundraising and participating in the LECOM Scholarship Auction;

  • Faculty member will participate in scholarly activity so to enrich and broaden the student learning experience;

  • Faculty member will commit to being a representative of LECOM by being actively involved in the community, including, but not limited to, serving on Boards, participating in community fundraisers and overall outreach; and

  • Accept other duties needed/assigned for the Institution's needs.

Minimum Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Strong leadership skills with experience in strategic planning, systems improvement, budgets, effective management, and a background in health policy;

  • Knowledge of preclinical education concepts necessary to ensure a proper understanding for students;

  • Demonstrates an ability to effectively lead faculty and staff in the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the institution.

  • Have a working knowledge of affiliation agreements;

  • Understanding of osteopathic principles and practices;

  • Compliance with state and federal regulations and safety protocols;

  • Knowledge of patient's ("HIPAA") and student's ("FERPA") privacy;

  • Follow proper OSHA and safety guidelines; protect equipment (office, facility);

  • Strong communications skills are essential as well as computer literacy (MS Office Suite [i.e., Word, PowerPoint and Excel]) and accurate data entry skills;

  • Excellent organizational skills;

  • Must be accurate and attentive to detail;

  • Must be trained and certified on the institutional data system;

  • Maintaining an established work schedule;

  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills, including tact and diplomacy;

  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through;

  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands;

  • Maintaining confidentiality of work related information and materials;

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;

  • Be able to be flexible to accept other duties needed/assigned for the practice needs;

  • The ability to work cooperatively and collegially with others, consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect and EEO rules and regulations;

  • The ability to report to work as scheduled, ready to devote full attention and energy to the important work of LECOM; and

  • The ability to accept work directives from managers and supervisors in a respectful, professional and cooperative manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and experience equivalent to: an earned Degree as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from a COCA accredited college of osteopathic medicine. Candidate must be board certified; licensed or eligible for a current license to practice osteopathic medicine; and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in academic administration and medical education at the level of Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, Department Chair, Director of Medical Education, and/or Residency Program Director is preferred.
