This position serves as the Associate Dean for Research for the College of Social Sciences (CSS) and also serves as Director of the CSS Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), which is the research enterprise of the college.

The role of this position is to assist the CSS Dean in articulating the research goals, vision, and strategic plans for the college.

This position is responsible for leading the development and growth of research in CSS by connecting faculty and students with research opportunities and facilitating the productivity of their work, developing collaborative team initiatives, and mentoring junior faculty and students in research and grants development. This position represents the college and research opportunities and accomplishments to internal and external stakeholders and advances the research enterprise of the college, and upholds compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and policies related to the conduct of scientific inquiry.

Duties and Responsibilities

Administration and Development of Research Activities

Responsible for overall management and oversight of the research and research-related instructional enterprise of the college, promoting innovative, collaborative, and transformational research.

Administers, directs, and coordinates research and instructional activities funded by external agencies as well as University sources.

Fosters strategic research planning, identifying and pursuing funding sources for innovative research and programs; strengthens relationships with funding agencies; identifies new research directions and recommends research priorities to the Dean, in consultation with faculty; responsible for all aspects of research administration including compliance and financial issues; oversees proposal preparation and submission of complex funding opportunities; and facilitates research partnerships within and external to the college.

Promotes and assists in the coordination of synergistic activities between the instructional and research programs in the college; advances educational and training opportunities for students in alignment with CSS research activities.

Facilitates the recruitment of key academic and research leaders needed to implement research and program priorities; promotes and guides the research goals and efforts of faculty, especially junior faculty; mentors faculty on research career issues in addition to providing workshops and other training opportunities.

Identifies and pursues funding sources for innovative research; establishes and maintains relationships with state and federal agencies, private industry, private foundations, and others to identify funding opportunities/grants support for social sciences research activities.

Develops, plans, coordinates and writes grant proposals for external funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, National Institutes for Health, State and University funding sources, and other organizations as applicable.

Facilitates professional development of key academic leaders and faculty needed to implement research and program priorities.

Chairs the CSS Research Council; oversees travel awards, research seed grants, and other research development activities.

Administration of Social Science Research Institute

Oversees SSRI, which is responsible for grant administration in the CSS; directs all activities in SSRI including recruitment, evaluation, and supervision of staff, faculty, and Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i (RCUH) employees.

Oversees research programs and extramurally funded projects that are directed by program chairs/directors within SSRI.

Oversees pre- and post-award grant activities including pilot grants and grants development awards and activities.

Ensures research compliance related to federal and university regulations and policies such as HIPAA, Human Subjects, and data governance.

Assures sound fiscal and risk management for grants and contracts.

Communication and Representation

Communicates and collaborates with key internal and external stakeholders on research and research administration issues, representing the Dean as requested.

Maintains and builds effective working relationship with faculty, research program directors, research services staff, and other senior staff; provides leadership to build and strengthen research relationships within and across departments and other schools/colleges at UH Manoa and with alumni, professional organizations, and other relevant groups; works with other campus research leadership on strategic partnerships.

Additional Responsibilities

Develops an annual report that describes research accomplishments of CSS.

Oversees reporting requirements of CSS, including SSRI and institutional grants; responds to requests from UH Manoa, legislature, or others as required.

Develops an annual budget to support duties of research-related activities.

Promotes diversity and inclusion.

Serves as investigator or decision-maker on behalf of the Dean on issues involving academic or research compliance or misconduct, workplace non-violence, academic freedom, Title IX, or other grievances or complaints involving CSS faculty, staff, students, or other related parties.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Ph.D. or equivalent in the Social Sciences or related field.

2.Two years experience in leadership, management, mentorship, and development of large research programs in an academic setting.

3.Experience working directly with U.S. federal funding agencies.

4.Experience with budget management, supervision of professional staff, and research compliance issues.

5.Established record of research, including extramural grant-funding and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

6.Record of professional experience as a professor, researcher, senior scientist, or comparable experience.

7.Experience working with multicultural populations and in promoting diversity, affirmative action, and equal opportunity.

8.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Desirable Qualifications

1.Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

2.Scholarly accomplishments in the fields of health and health disparities; sustainability and resilience; public policy; indigenous studies; or Pacific and Asian studies.

3.Academic accomplishments in grants, publications, and international research programs of excellence.

4.Strong and currently active track record of securing external research funding.

5.Proven track record of valuing multidisciplinary research, varied methodologies, and community engaged scholarship.

6.Ability to foster and maintain harmonious working relationships among employees, faculty, students, collaborators, stakeholders, and the local community.

7.Familiarity and effective working relationships with U.S. federal funding agencies (e.g., National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Energy (DoE), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)), private sector, state and local government, and/or philanthropic foundations.
