Job Summary:

Our associate attorneys support Liberty Mutual trial attorneys from field offices across the country as they handle a variety of legal issues and collaborate to represent Liberty Mutual and our policyholders in civil litigation and workers' compensation matters. Because it does not entail personal legal appearances, this position does not require travel.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Using litigation protocols to develop and revise appropriate legal strategies for all stages of litigation and communicate them to our claims representatives and policyholders

  • Developing and rendering clear, unambiguous legal opinions and strategies

  • Researching the law applicable to cases and matters

  • Conducting necessary and appropriate discovery, and drafting legal documents, pleadings, motions and opinions

Qualifications:

  • An LLM or JD degree

  • Membership in the New York State Bar

  • Ability to develop appropriate strategies for discovery, investigation and handling matters

  • Familiarity with the latest developments in the practice of law, as well as pertinent knowledge in related fields

  • Proficiency with technologies that improve the practice of law, reduce costs and facilitate remote work

  • General knowledge of civil procedure and the litigation process

  • Talent for cultivating strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Aptitude for detail-oriented, analytical thinking

Qualifications The Office of Division Counsel, Large Business and International (LB&I) is headquartered in Washington, DC and has five Area Counsels located in Manhattan, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Downers Grove, IL; Houston, TX; and Oakland, CA. Each Area Counsel is responsible for legal work within a defined geographic group. Large Business and International provides legal services to the LB&I Division of the Internal Revenue Service. Our taxpayers are corporations, subchapter S corporations, and partnerships with substantial assets. We work with complicated issues of tax law and accounting principles in the context of an expanding global environment. LB&I employs over 275 attorneys nationwide, who provide a full range of legal services on all issues, including advising LB&I compliance agents, handling litigation in the U.S. Tax Court, and referring and recommending litigation to the Department of Justice. You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement: GS-13: Possess a J.D. and a minimum for two years of professional legal experience after receiving a J.D., of which at least one year is in tax law (one year must have been comparable to the GS12 level). * OR- Possess a Tax LL.M. plus one year of professional tax legal experience (one year must be comparable to the GS-12 level). You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.
