The Associate Athletic Trainer for Football will work directly with the Head Athletic Trainer Football, athletic trainers, sport administration, coaches, physicians, athletic counseling and sports psychology personnel, sports dieticians, strength and conditioning personnel, and other allied health personnel to deliver comprehensive healthcare and lifetime wellness services for University of Michigan student athletes. The Associate Athletic Trainer for Football will have a wide range of clinical and administrative daily responsibilities to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of student athletes; preparticipation physicals; inventory management of supplies and equipment; maintaining medical records; completing required insurance claims; daily interaction, communication, and relationship building with coaching staff, strength and conditioning and sports performance personnel, physicians, fellow athletic trainers, other members of the medical community, and athletic administration; attending team practices and events; supervising other athletic trainers and athletic training students; assisting with various administrative duties; and performing other duties as assigned.
Assist the Head Athletic Trainer Football as the primary medical contact for the football program.
Serve as a medical contact and liaison between members of the coaching staff, student athletes, parents, physicians, members of the Student-Athlete Health & Welfare Team, other allied health personnel, sport administration, and others.
Provide a high level of medical care, customer service, and communication at all times to all entities.
Clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care and lifetime wellness services for student athletes as assigned to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses under the supervision of team physicians.
Attend assigned team practices, competitions, strength and conditioning sessions, and other team events as needed and/or directed within the established scope of coverage.
Maintain a safe environment for student athletes to include decision making involving the ability of student athletes to safely return to practice or competition following an injury and/or illness and communicate participation status with the appropriate personnel.
Provide care based on standard physical therapy and/or athletic training guidelines as directed by a physician, and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Provide written and/or verbal reports to fellow Student Athlete Health and Welfare personnel, physicians, coaching personnel, and other pertinent individuals as needed and/or requested.
Assist with recruitment, retention, and hiring of highly qualified and competent Student Athlete Health & Welfare personnel at all levels.
Assist with the research and determination of current and future needs within the department then assist with the development of detailed proposals as directed.
Assist the Head Football Athletic Trainer with all tasks for which he/she is responsible and assist with the management, operation, and general administration in his/her absence.
Ensure budgetary compliance through efficient financial management.
Assist with the research and procurement of new equipment, as well as ensure the repair and replacement of existing equipment.
Medical documentation and record keeping.
Counseling and education of student athletes.
Coordination of medical coverage for various athletic events, including Big 10 and NCAA Championship events.
Assist with University, Big 10, and/or NCAA Substance Abuse Testing as directed.
Maintain the organization, administration, inventory, and staffing of athletic training facilities.
Establish and maintain collaborative alliances with multiple stakeholders at the University of Michigan.
Use technology and social media to foster an effective and efficient overall experience for student athletes and department team members.
Assist with special projects as assigned regarding donor and student athlete support.
Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse.
Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by the NCAA, Big 10 Conference, University of Michigan, and University of Michigan Department of Athletics.
Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
Assist the Head Football Athletic Trainer, Senior Associate Athletic Director, and team physicians with regard to the day to day supervision of Student Athlete Health and Welfare personnel.
Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) and the State of Michigan Bureau of Health Care Services.
Act as liaison with other members of the athletic department team in issues involving student athletes, including compliance, academics, athletic counseling, nutrition, strength and conditioning, and others.
Participate in special projects, committees, or other initiatives as assigned.
Represent the University of Michigan and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at University, State, Regional, and national conferences and/or meetings as assigned.
Supervision, education, and preceptor of students assisting within Athletic Medicine.
Supervision and education of other athletic trainers as assigned.
Master's Degree in athletic training, exercise science, sports or health care administration, or other related field.
Minimum of seven (7) years related experience in intercollegiate or professional athletics.
Minimum of five (5) years related experience in NCAA Division I or professional football.
Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
Eligible for athletic training licensure by the State of Michigan Bureau of Health Care Services.
Compliance and understanding of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules.
Ability to champion a culture of innovative thought, life long learning and continuous improvement.
Ability to meet Continuing Education requirements as established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification and the State of Michigan.
Ability to follow policies and procedures set forth by the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Strong evaluation, management, and rehabilitation skills, including demonstrated proficiency with manual therapy and the application of evidence based medicine.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge and understanding of unique aspects of student athlete populations.
Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to create programs and services to further drive program enhancements.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and advance strategic plans that support student athletes and the mission of the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Student Athlete Health & Welfare.
Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, student athletes, physicians, and other allied health personnel.
Must possess problem solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative and stress tolerance to various situations in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
Must provide a high level of customer service.
Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non traditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on call as a regular part of the position.
Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces.
Proven ability to multitask, work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
Demonstrated proficiency in leadership and supervision of other professionals.
Demonstrated successful decision making skills.
Demonstrated track record of developing collaborative relationships with both internal and external constituencies.
Certification and license as a physical therapist.
Additional certifications and/or expertise in adjunctive therapies (e.g. dry needling, ART, PRI, etc.).
CPR/First Aid Instructor.
Healthcare administration experience.
