Job Purpose

The Associate Scientist shall provide analytical and technical support for the accurate and timely analysis of ingredients and finished products as required by major stakeholders in the Mars Wrigley Confectionery (MWC) using routine methodologies. This role will work with cross-functional partners in Science, Technology, Quality & Food Safety, and Commercial.

Global Innovation Center (GIC) creates and maintains the competitive advantage for MWC by bringing the highest quality product to the consumer. The Analytical Science team evaluates, develops and implements quality systems and provides analytical expertise to support the business objectives of MWC by providing strategic technical direction, analytical methods and protocols as well as technical and quality training to its customer groups. Analytical Science collaborates with its customers and suppliers to integrate MWC's Quality Systems and analytical protocols to enhance customer service and products. Analytical Science is responsible for identification, assessment and implementation of new analytical technologies that support product and process development across all MWC functions. Analytical Science also conducts product and ingredient testing, method evaluation-development-validation, technology transfer and technical training to support MWC worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Train and guide analysts in aspects of the laboratory and Global Quality policies where they are trained and proficient.

  • Operate, verify calibration of and maintain core instrumentation (UV-Vis, auto-titrator, balances, etc.) and related support materials

  • Prioritize and organize day-to-day work flow with input from managers.

  • Conduct laboratory determinations using basic techniques such as titrations, pH, moisture, refractometer, densitometer, water activity, hardness, particle size analysis as applies to key components such as gum base, sweeteners, flavors, etc.

  • Understand and independently execute internal and compendia methods.

  • Provide accurate and timely data generation for compendia, MWC and vendor methods including calculations and interpretation of results.

  • Perform basic technical writing for the generation of routine standard operating procedures, test methods and other laboratory or quality protocols with assistance.

  • Assist in core product analyses and related project support such as, shelf life studies, etc., with strong guidance of Manager or more senior staff member.

  • Analyze, evaluate and interpret routine results to ensure data integrity and accuracy as well as report out of specification of aberrant data.

  • Provide limited mentoring and training in core areas (instrumental analysis and wet chemistry)

  • Understand the basics of how to run analytical test methods on food ingredients and core products.

  • Active participant in a team environment demonstrating engagement in the Mars Five Principles

  • Ongoing support of laboratory continuous improvement initiatives for processes and protocols.

  • Understand and follow safety requirements when working in the lab.

  • Build broad knowledge in areas of analytical chemistry through cross-training and by actively engaging in your development.

  • Participate in Quality and Safety audits.

Qualifications

Education

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Biology or other hard science degree

Experience

  • 1+ years minimum experience in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical or related industry or equivalent analytical laboratory

  • Prefer a minimum of 2 years experience

  • Wet chemistry

  • Chromatography

  • Protein Chemistry

  • Strong communication skills

  • Proficient in and consistently uses Good Documentation Practices

  • Excellent individual time management skills

  • Build personal interpersonal and relationship skills with guidance

  • Develop technical skills within core technologies with mentoring from more experienced scientists

  • Experience in word processing and spreadsheet analysis such as Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Familiarity with basic ISO/FDA laboratory requirements and statistical methods such as regression and trend analysis, mean, standard deviation, relative standard deviation

The Materials Science team develops new technologies and products through a deep understanding of the science behind product performance. We provide technical expertise and strategic technical direction to support the business objectives of Mars-Wrigley Confectionary. The Materials Science team is responsible for taking new ideas to the pilot scale and collaborating with business partners where a deep understanding of product structure, processing, or properties is needed to achieve product and production performance. The materials group also assists in the physical characterization of products and ingredients and the development of new characterization methods to support Mars-Wrigley Confectionary R&D and Technology teams worldwide. Key Responsibilities * Independently develop technical strategies to deliver program goals leveraging robust scientific methods and technical rigor with strong commitment to quality * Design, implement, create research proposals and conduct research to fundamentally understand structures and chemical properties of food materials that enable the development of desired new products or improvements of existing products * May lead complex programs as a program leader or may be called on to lead a special task force addressing critical business issues at pace * Assess and develop efficient and better technical solutions or processes based on the fundamental understanding of manufacturing and products.
