A Day in the Life

Initiate, lead, conduct and support assigned chemistry projects under the supervision of more senior departmental personnel . This position requires the ability to conduct chemical evaluations in support of new or existing processes. Documentation of testing, results, and conclusions is expected.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING AND OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED:

  • Performs chemical evaluations of new and existing products and processes.

  • Prepares samples and performs testing utilizing various laboratory instruments including the gas chromatographs, FTIR spectrometer, UV/Visible spectrophotometer, and Karl Fischer moisture titrators.

  • Drafts protocols and reports of low complexity.

  • Remains abreast of chemical applications to include changes/enhancements in laboratory technology, and industry standards.

  • Performs specific technical or project tasks by following specific, detailed instructions and established procedures.

  • With supervision, manages the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements

  • Assist in the monitoring of the Hazardous Waste streams, MSDS books and container labeling system.

  • Problem solving is guided by well established policies, procedures and or precedent.

  • Recognizes common and generally routine problems of low complexity when they occur.

  • Uses standard techniques, theories and tools to identify and develop solutions to basic technical problems of low complexity.

  • May provide training and guidance to less experienced team members.

  • Adheres to safety policy procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

  • Continue to develop skills through additional training and educational programs

  • Assist other areas of technical services department as needed.

MUST HAVE: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Bachelor's plus some relevant experience. Education in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related scientific discipline required. Medical device experience strongly preferred.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

ASSOCIATE LEVEL:

  • Some IT experience in college with a Bachelor's or Master's degree

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:

  • 2+ years of IT experience with a Bachelors Degree

  • Some IT experience with a Masters Degree

SENIOR LEVEL:

  • 4+ years of IT experience with a Bachelors Degree

  • 2+ years of IT experience with a Masters Degree

PRINCIPAL LEVEL:

  • 7+ years of IT experience with a Bachelors Degree

  • 5+ years of IT experience with a Masters Degree

SR PRINCIPAL LEVEL:

  • 10+ years of IT experience with a Bachelors Degree

  • 8+ years of IT experience with a Masters Degree

SPECIALIZED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Basic understanding of technical principles, theories, and techniques.

  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.

  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and computer software skills

  • Ability to compile and organize technical data using Excel, Word, or Access.

  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety precautions and protocols for safe handling and the disposal of hazardous agents, re-agents, chemicals and materials.

  • Strong knowledge of chemistry, mathematics and computers.

  • Working knowledge of spectroscopic techniques.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Understands own GBU products and has a more complete understanding of at least one related technical area.

Careers that Change Lives A Day in the Life The Quality Engineering position on the team supports new product development for the Hernia/ Access and Instrumentation Platform. In this role, the Quality Engineer works as part of the quality team supporting the cross-functional core team. An understanding of electro-mechanical design, validation, and/or design for reliability/six sigma is preferred. As an important member of our Quality Team, you will provide guidance and implement strategies that drive product quality and continuous improvement. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING AND OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED: * Actively participate in product development cycle by reviewing mechanical/electrical and software project documentation, participating in product risk assessments, and working closely with Product Development to develop appropriate verification and validation testing requirements. * Assesses overall product risk by facilitating the development of risk management tools such as the risk management report, failure mode and effects analyses (FMEAs), etc. * Collect, analyze and interpret statistical data. Performs analyses and provide reports to management as required. * Contributes to the successful completion of Process Validation initiatives by facilitating validation master plans and the qualification activities required to meet validation requirements. May include Process Flows, Control Plans, Design of Experiments, Measurement Systems Analyses, and Process Capability Analyses. * Perform Gage R&R and correlation studies. * Monitors supplier performance and initiates corrective actions, as required. Develops part qualification plans and supports the production part approval process. * Job requires interaction with cross-functional project team members as well as members of the QA extended team. * Tracking timelines and facilitating the required Quality Engineering deliverables. * Assisting with projects and assuring proper and consistent implementation of the quality engineering tools. * Provide support to other quality groups to assure efficient completion of project requirements. * Identify and implement software process metrics for the software product development life cycle. Develop, analyze and monitor metrics pertaining to software defects uncovered during development, testing and post-release. * Provide solutions to a wide range of difficult challenges. Work independently to determine and develop solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives. * Provide guidance on the principles of electrical engineering and IEC standards as they relate to the new product development activities of electromechanical medical devices * Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills. Ability to work on teams as well as individually. Able to set and meet goals. Organized and detail oriented. Problem solving and analysis skills. * Statistical knowledge and Minitab experience. Demonstrated ability to document test data, analyze test results utilizing statistics, write clear and concise lab reports, and make recommendations to evaluate product. MUST HAVE: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION REQUIRED: * B.S. degree in Engineering, Math, Physical Science, or equivalent field * Preferred: M.S. degree in Engineering, Math, Physical Science, or equivalent field YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: * Minimum Experience: 2+ years of experience in a regulated industry (can be substituted for an Advanced degree in a related discipline) SPECIALIZED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE: * Fundamental understanding of electromechanical designs and manufacturing processes to support designing, troubleshooting, refining and qualifying the design to ensure the sustainable manufacturing of medical devices both internal and external. * Experience in a regulated industry * Experience with Minitab or similar statistical analysis tools * Good interpersonal skills; Ability to work effectively in a team environment and build strong working relationships. * Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; Ability to work well under pressure and maintain positive, enthusiastic attitude * Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to successfully balance and prioritize multiple ongoing projects/tasks (Project Management skills). * High degree of initiative and self-motivation. Strong analytical skills and the a.bility to solve problems through analytical reasoning. NICE TO HAVE: * ASQ Certified Quality Engineering (CQE) * Knowledge of and experience in developing and manufacturing medical devices in conformance with Quality System Regulations, ISO13485, 14971 and 60601 requirements * Experience with Geometric Dimensional and Tolerancing (GD&T) and the ability to read blueprints * Support reliability activities for new product development.
