Works with the communications director and senior members of the communications department in developing and overseeing a strategy to raise the University of Utah's profile and build its reputation as a top 10 public institution of higher education. The associate director will serve as part of the University of Utah's Communications and Marketing team, producing strategic, dynamic editorial content on the teaching, research and service missions of the university. The associate director will also coordinate the work of others, in and outside the UMC team, aligning their efforts for a comprehensive regional and national communication strategy. Finally, the associate director will manage media relations and regularly serve as the institution's spokesperson.

Responsibilities

  • Produces internal communications, news releases and other editorial content for publication in print and online, supporting the strategic marketing and communications goals of the university in media outreach, social media and web priorities.

  • Develops story ideas, and assists other university communications staff in evaluating tips, prepares and distributes news releases and writes for internal campus audiences, the community and media representatives.

  • Assists with editing of university publications.

  • Conducts interviews with faculty and university leaders from various fields.

  • Collaborates skillfully with colleagues in order to determine editorial content.

  • Develops and fosters productive relationships with members of the media.

  • Demonstrates progressive expertise and knowledge of regional and national media, media trends and emerging technologies and platforms.

  • Demonstrates leadership or managerial experience in public relations, communications/journalism or education.

  • Regularly serves as university spokesperson.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business, Communication or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Preferences

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Administration, or related area preferred.

  • Master's degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Administration, or related area preferred.

  • Has experience engaging journalists and other relevant audiences through social and other nontraditional media networks.

  • Experience managing small teams of writers, photographers, designers, and other communication professionals is a plus.
