Works with the Director of Content and Editorial Strategy and senior members of the communications department to enhance the University of Utah's profile and reputation as a top-tier public institution of higher education. The associate director will serve as part of the University of Utah's Communications & Marketing (UMC) team, creating high-quality content across various formats. This role will also collaborate with the marketing team to promote the university's brand through compelling storytelling and will support high-level, strategic, institution-wide messaging for both internal and external audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and repackage content that supports the university's strategic marketing and communications goals, focusing on high-level, institution-wide messaging. Examples of content include feature stories, profiles, news articles, social media blurbs, web site copy, video promotion, slides, and new media trends.

  • Develop communications plans, story ideas, and innovative strategies to generate and distribute content that supports the university's strategic goals of growth, innovation, research, service, and societal impact.

  • Stay on top of industry trends and integrate new content formats and creative distribution channels into the university's content strategy.

  • Work closely with the UMC's marketing, digital, and media relations teams to ensure cohesive and effective content campaigns.

  • Ensure all content and strategic storytelling is accurate, on-brand, and meets the university's high standards of quality and editorial excellence.

  • Analyze audience insights, analytics, and feedback to refine content strategies and improve engagement across all channels.

Skills:

  • Prowess to discover and explore new and emerging content trends and distribution strategies.

  • Ability to generate and repackage content for various channels.

  • Exceptional writing and multimedia skills with strong editorial judgment.

  • Proficiency in content management systems (CMS) and editorial workflows.

  • Experience using SEO and content analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, SEMrush).

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent collaboration, communication and people skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master's degree in Business Administration or related area preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, English, or related area preferred.

  • Master's degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or related area preferred.

  • Has experience engaging targeted audiences through varied communications methods. Magazine experience a plus.

  • Experience working with other writers, photographers, designers, and other communication professionals
