The School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE) at Oregon State University (OSU) seeks to fill one full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track or tenured position, at the rank of Assistant, or Associate, or Full Professor in Civil Engineering to begin September 16, 2024.

Upon appointment to the faculty, rank will be determined commensurate with qualifications. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position will support research and teaching in the general area of geomatics engineering. The incumbent will have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: advanced geospatial science (e.g., geodesy, global navigation satellite systems, photogrammetry, structure from motion, InSAR, lidar, remote sensing, boundary law, GIS, geovisualization, and geospatial analytics) within civil engineering and surveying applications (e.g., smart cities, connected vehicles, natural hazards engineering, infrastructure resilience, asset management, transportation, navigational safety, and property surveying).

Key Responsibilities

50% Teaching and related duties

Delivers four (quarter-long) courses each year in support of the CCE undergraduate and graduate curricula. Participates with faculty and administrative staff in curriculum development, course design, and course delivery strategies. Advises undergraduate and graduate students and participates in school- and college-level extended education efforts. Assesses student learning for each assigned course, each term, and prepares proper documentation in support of the accreditation process.

40% Research and scholarly activities

Research includes the development and leadership of a funded research program that is significant and visible. This includes writing proposals; conducting funded and unfunded research; presenting results at professional conferences, meetings, other institutions, and industry; and directing and mentoring doctoral and master's students in all aspects of research and professional development. The scholarly expectations for this position lie in the discovery of new knowledge and understanding, the integration of knowledge leading to new interpretations or applications, and the dissemination of knowledge via peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and, when appropriate, via development of new technologies, materials, methods, educational approaches, or filing patents.

10% Service

A balance of institutional and professional service is expected. Institutional service includes participation in school committees, faculty meetings, and outreach activities, as well as in college and university committees. Professional service includes conference organization and program committee service for professional societies, peer review service for journals and conference proceedings, proposal review service, and journal editorships.

Cooperation with school faculty and staff to promote achievement of college and university goals in relation to building a more inclusive and collaborative community, centered on student success, is expected. Specific workload assignments are at the discretion of the school head.

What You Will Need

Minimum/Required Qualifications for all ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor):

  • PhD in Civil, Geomatics, Geospatial, or Geodetic Engineering, Surveying, or closely related discipline.

  • Record of high-impact scholarly work with potential for distinction.

  • Demonstrated record of professional service in area of specialization.

  • Demonstrated record of developing internal, national, or international partnerships to advance research and education missions in civil engineering or closely related disciplines.

  • Demonstrated record of promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within professional community.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Minimum/Required Qualifications at the ranks of Associate/Full Professor

  • Distinction in teaching as evidenced by a record of sustained effectiveness.

  • Record of high-impact scholarly work that is internationally recognized.

  • Demonstrated record of professional leadership in their area of specialization.

  • For candidates seeking to be hired at a rank other than Assistant Professor, they should meet the OSU teaching, advising, research and service criteria for appointment at the desired rank (see the OSU Faculty Handbook for details). OSU will consider previous years of experience at other, similar institutions towards timelines for rank or tenure promotions.

What We Would Like You to Have

Preferred Qualifications at all ranks:

  • Passed or demonstrated interest in completing the fundamentals of survey or fundamentals of engineering exam.

  • Obtained or is interested in pursuing Professional Engineer or Professional Land Surveyor licensure and/or applicable professional certifications, such as Certified Federal Surveyor (CFedS), Certified Photogrammetrist, or Certified Hydrographer.

  • Expressed interest in curriculum development as the school progresses towards offering an undergraduate degree in geodesy, geomatics, and geospatial engineering.

  • Demonstrated record of preparing students to work in industry, national laboratories, or academia. This could include prior experience that enables incorporation of engaging industrially relevant examples into student instruction.

  • Ability to effectively lead and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Research program that complements existing activities at Oregon State University
