Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for state-wide extension, including developing veterinary herd/flock health management programs for poultry, swine, dairy, beef, small ruminants, and aquatic species for food production, with emphasis on the prevention and control of animal diseases with particular relevance to animal industries and food production in Hawai'i.

  • Provides veterinary care and supervision for the college's animal research, instruction, and extension projects, and meets compliance and accreditation requirements.

  • Collaborates with faculty, extension educators, producer organizations, state livestock commodity specialists, the University Veterinarian, state and federal regulatory agencies, and field veterinarians.

  • Teaches undergraduate classes related to animal and veterinary science, in line with departmental priorities, such as animal anatomy, animal diseases and field experience. Teach writing intensives courses as needed.

  • Advises and guides undergraduate and graduate students, including pre-veterinary medicine students.

  • Obtains extramural funding for extension.

  • Participates in departmental, college, and university affairs.

  • Perform related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Assistant Specialist

  • Master's degree from a college or university of recognized standing and at least one year of experience in veterinary related area to the current job assignment. (An applicant with Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or DVM without a master degree meets or exceeds the master degree minimum qualifications of the position.)

  • Licensure in veterinary practice in the US or achieving Hawai`i State Veterinary Licensure within two years.

  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials, commensurate with academic rank of Assistant Specialist.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Minimum Qualifications for Associate Specialist

  • D.V.M. from a college or university of recognized standing and at least 4 years of experience in veterinary related area at the next lower rank with demonstrated increasing professional maturity, including at least two years of experience directly related to the current job assignment.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assignments and activities, including the work of assistants when appropriate.

  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators as necessary.

  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials commensurate with academic rank of Associate Specialist.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a culturally- and ethnically-diverse environment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in animal sciences or related discipline from a college or university of recognized standing.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach college-level classes.

  • Experience in developing and teaching distance courses.

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in area pertinent to livestock production or aquatic species.

  • Practical experience with a variety of livestock and/or livestock producers, and knowledge of animal care and regulations, and leadership skills in developing outreach and education projects.

  • Demonstrated record of scholarly publications and applications of extension grants either independently or collaboratively.
