Position Summary

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in tree biology, structure, and health care at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with a 70% outreach, 25% instruction, and 5% university and professional service appointment. Terms of the appointment as 9 or 12 month are negotiable. Successful candidates will be expected to collaborate with faculty in forestry, urban forestry, and water resources and help grow an emphasis in community forestry and arboriculture within the Warnell School.

Outreach (i.e., extension) responsibilities include development of externally funded, regionally / nationally recognized outreach program based on relevant, refereed literature and science-based information targeting professional and general audiences. Program areas may include, for example: tree health and risk management, tree biology and physiology, trees and climate change, assisting stakeholders with standard compliance, and identifying industry needs.

Teaching duties include supporting the Community Forestry and Arboriculture program, including undergraduate and graduate student advising, and teaching two courses annually, including a technical arboriculture course and a course related to the candidate's expertise. Professional service includes serving on School/University committees and actively participating in professional/scientific societies. Applied research is expected to support teaching and outreach programs, and would broadly relate to tree biology and physiology of tree growth and maintenance. Research emphases could include tree biology, tree planting and pruning techniques, pest/tree dynamics and tree stress responses, and soil/tree relations as well as developing new methods for assessing tree health and structure, and developing prescriptions for treatments.

Additional Requirements

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. degree prior to the starting date in forestry, natural resources, ecology, horticulture, biology, or a closely related field with expertise in the academic areas listed above.

Appointment to Associate Professor requires a record consistent with promotion to Associate Professor at the Warnell School such as strong evidence of emerging stature as a regional/national authority, acquiring and administering external funding, ability to produce and communicate research, and excellence in teaching and working with students. Service at the Associate Professor level for 1-2 years is preferred for this rank.

Individuals with expertise in the following academic areas relative to natural resources management in the urban context are encouraged to apply: urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, plant biology, tree biomechanics, plant breeding, plant health care, and ecology.
