The Alfred University Performing Arts Division's Performance Design and Technology (PDAT) Department seeks a faculty member with a broad background in performance design and technology to begin the Fall 2024 academic year as an Assistant or Associate Professor. Candidates with a broad range of research and design interests, including LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC theatre, are encouraged to apply for this tenure-track position. The annual salary for this position will be $54,000-$65,000, depending on experience.

We are searching for applicants that have an interest in working in an interdisciplinary manner and enjoy the process of making in new and different ways. Candidates should have a terminal degree in an area of theatrical design or a closely related field.

The candidate will teach and develop a diverse curriculum including Scenic Design, Stage Makeup, and Costume Design for Dance and have demonstrated skill sets in at least two areas of design. The candidate shall also design for divisional productions.

The candidate will be instrumental in helping to develop the PDAT experience as we move from a minor to a major. We are looking for an artist with a forward-thinking vision of design and design practices, and a dynamic educator whose style for teaching and mentoring embraces a range of production needs and structures.

The successful candidate will engage in advising students, service and leadership at the departmental, divisional, university-wide and community levels, recruitment, and in other administrative duties expected from faculty. This candidate will additionally pursue creative and scholarly research. The candidate's academic, programmatic, artistic and service work is expected to support and advance student growth through the university's commitment to mentorship, inclusion, and intersections.

The Performing Arts Division is an accredited member of the Middle States Commission of Higher Education. The educational programs in performing arts are open to and serve the entire campus community.

Qualifications

While we recognize that no single candidate will possess all the following, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Administrative experience in an academic or arts organizations

  • Terminal degree (MF A preferred) in an area of design for theatre, or its equivalent.

  • A minimum of three years of previous college-level teaching experience is preferred.

  • Strong commitments to teaching excellence and recruitment.

  • A forward-thinking vision and practice for performance design that is reflective of new ideas and ways of making beyond the traditions and hierarchies of the past

  • A teaching and mentoring style that embraces a range of production needs and structures

  • A record of effective and successful collaborations

  • A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to professional participation in the Performance Design or scenography field at large

  • Knowledge of the current landscape in Performance Design and Technology in higher education and the field at large

Responsibilities

  • Teach 24 credit hours per academic year related to PDAT.

  • Take a leading role in developing the program.

  • Mentor students and support them preparing for and finding work in the field post graduation.

  • Actively work to recruit students

  • Serve as a model of professionalism and act as a resource for students within the teaching-learning environment.

  • Model the university mission through dedicated job performance including service, adaptability, respectful collaboration, and active support of the Performing Arts Division.
