Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Educational Leadership in the College for Education and Engaged Learning is looking for an Assistant or Associate tenure-track scholar with a research agenda grounded in social justice as related to special education leadership. The ideal candidate will have an active disability studies or DisCrit research agenda that engages scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in dismantling ableism and discriminatory practices and policies affecting students with disabilities. The candidate should be able to teach aspiring leaders about equity-oriented leadership for organizational change and academic and behavioral strategies that support students intellectually, socially, and emotionally. We hope to recruit a strong scholar who has relevant experience as an equity-oriented leader (e.g., Principal, Vice Principal, Special Education Department Chair, Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultants (LDT-Cs), Child Study Team members, Director or Assistant Superintendent of Special Services, or related experience). The candidate will help us develop educational leaders who bring asset-based thinking and a social justice lens to special education. The candidate must be able to develop our students as leaders with a robust background in leadership of special education services and navigating the federal and state laws governing special education. The candidate must be willing to develop graduate curriculum on special education and to help ensure that we are programmatically aligned with CAEP and the Council for Exceptional Children standards. The candidate will also provide service and leadership at the University and at local, state, and national levels as well as contribute to the development of a doctoral program. Montclair State University is poised to be the tri-state destination for administrators looking for a special education foundation for school and district administration. We seek a scholar who will help position our Educational Leadership Program and University as a national leader in special education leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Doctorate in educational leadership or closely related field with a concentration in special education or disability studies (The doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2024.)

  • A well-defined research agenda and evidence of scholarly activities appropriate to career stage

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice work, in general and/or as applied to special education (e.g., training or direct experience in equity and justice work; willingness to reflect on oneself and systems of power; research, teaching, or service focused on issues like dismantling ableism or promoting asset-based thinking)

PREFERRED:

  • Experience teaching special education/disability studies and educational leadership courses at the graduate level in-person and/or online

  • Equity-oriented leadership experience in a role relevant to P-12 special education (e.g., Director of Special Services)

  • Experience working with community-based organizations, state agencies, or schools on special services

  • Experience advising graduate students

  • Evidence of potential or successful external research funding

  • Experience developing partnerships with school districts
