Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor in the department of Social Work. This is a full-time probationary (tenure track) position within the College of Community Studies and Public Affairs and will start on August 19, 2024.

Faculty members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to teach social work courses effectively to a diverse, contemporary student population and contribute to meaningful assessment of student learning.

  • Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.

  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.

  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.

  • Engage in service to the university and community.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of a master's degree in the specified discipline(s), with enrollment in a doctoral program for fields in which the doctoral degree is the terminal degree. Doctoral program must be successfully completed within 5 years to meet the requirement for tenure.

  • Demonstrated potential for success in teaching and professional service activities.

  • A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.

  • Effective Communication skills (written and verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an institution with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse faculty, staff and student population.

  • Specific Technical, Computer, and/or Software skills (as needed).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A completed terminal degree in the specified discipline(s). A PhD, EdD or DSW.

  • Specific skills required for the particular position include experience teaching course content on racial, ethnic people and interactions.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.

  • Experience developing course curricula at a post-secondary institution.

  • Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at a post-secondary institution.

  • Professional development and/or expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.

  • Experience providing academic advising for students at a post-secondary institution.

Description of College/School/Unit: The College of Community Studies and Public Affairs prepares you with broad liberal arts education, research abilities, and 21st century career readiness skills so you can have a meaningful impact on diverse and complex human social systems. Our community studies and public affairs coursework is responsive to your needs and incorporates multicultural and experiential learning in community settings. We prepare you to understand the science of behavior and to apply this knowledge in a variety of contexts as you seek to become a resilient agent of service and change.

The School/Academic Department: The mission of the Social Work program is to integrate the values, knowledge and skills inherent to social work into an academic program that will enable multi-culturally competent bachelor's level students to engage in generalist social work practices that will meet the needs of the increasingly diverse Twin Cities communities.

This program will prepare students for generalist social work practice with client systems of various sizes and types with special emphasis on Native Americans and communities of color. This program will build on a Liberal Arts base and will provide a curriculum foundation that contains the profession's values, knowledge and skills.

The program's mission concentrates on multicultural competence for generalist social work practice and aims to increase the capacity of:

  • Individuals and families to maintain their cultural identities and heritage;

  • Individuals and families to live and function successfully in two or more cultural environments;

  • Groups and communities to serve and nurture their members and to achieve a viable balance between community or group needs and available resources;

  • Organizations at all levels to continuously examine and modify their practices and procedures to ensure an equitable distribution of resources; and,

  • Organizations to provide race, gender, and class-sensitive service.

The Social Work Department is centrally located in St. Paul. The faculty of the department are racially and ethnically diverse and include six resident faculty supported by two support staff.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.

Employment for this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement for the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) which can be found at on the Minnesota State Employee and Labor Relations website.
