The College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applicants for multiple faculty positions for a college-wide cluster hire in the broad areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science with applications in autonomous systems, bioinformatics, manufacturing, energy systems, sensing and condition monitoring, robotics, wireless systems, and other emerging technology fields. Successful candidates will contribute to one or more of the following research centers in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems (CAMICS), the Center for Nanotechnology, the Industrial Assessment Center, the NSF Center for Multidisciplinary Research Excellence in Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Systems (MECIS), the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS). The college hosts an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in materials science and engineering, and a Ph.D. program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UTRGV has an enrollment of over 900 undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate programs (BSEE & BSCE) have ABET accreditation.

The department also has an MSE program in Electrical Engineering and is part of new PhD Programs in Material Science & Engineering (Fall 2023) and Computer Science with Interdisciplinary Applications (expected Fall 2024). The positions are for tenure track assistant professors; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for credit toward time on tenure track or for appointment as associate professor. Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a related field from an accredited university (at least conferred before the start date of September 1, 2024). Prospective candidates in all computer engineering areas are strongly encouraged to apply.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate/graduate core courses, develop laboratories, initiate externally funded research, have publications of research results in archival journals and/or conference proceedings and are expected to support the master's program in electrical engineering and the PhD program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications expected to start Fall 2024. We seek scholars whose research agenda aims to develop new methods, laboratory and understanding in machine learning and deep learning algorithms, optimization, data science, computer vision, image processing, and high performance and cloud computing by considering AI in wireless systems, intelligent transportation systems, control systems and robotics, Internet of Things, health care, and material science, and where the research simultaneously informs progress in AI and advances department, institution, and societal goals.

Candidates must be willing to offer or teach courses in machine learning, deep learning, control and robotics, embedded systems, software engineering, or operating systems, and are expected to have the potential for collaboration with faculty in the department. Candidates are also expected to lead and propose new research projects and proposals to attract external federal, state, or industrial funding, such as NSF, DoD, NIH, USDOT, NASA, TxDOT, or others.

Preferred Qualifications

The highest consideration will be given to applicants who have expertise in the Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning areas. Other preferred qualifications include postdoctoral research, industrial experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to be part of a collaborative team.
