The Assistant/Associate Director will have three essential functions: (1) Collaborate with the executive director of CUSE to facilitate the work of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship. This includes student advising, outreach, program facilitation, and other activities that support GVSU students' engagement in research, scholarship, and creative activities. (2) Collaborate with the CUSE team to provide individual and group advising. This includes presentations that support novice undergraduate researchers, students exploring external undergraduate research opportunities, and students pursuing doctoral programs. (3) Collaborate with the CUSE team to extend scholarly services to underserved student populations, including transfer students, first generation students, Pell-eligible, students, veterans, and students with social identities who are minoritized in their disciplines.
Specific scope of work includes:
Student Recruitment and Outreach
Work with CUSE and university partners to nurture a campus culture that encourages students to engage in curricular and co-curricular undergraduate research
Develop, refine, and implement strategies to encourage students to participate in undergraduate research and scholarship
Develop programs, workshops, web content, and other materials to encourage, recruit, and guide students as they seek research opportunities
Educate faculty and staff throughout campus about undergraduate research programs, grants and services available in OURS.
Highlight excellence in undergraduate research through university events and collaboration with University Communication.
Student Advising and Programming
Advise prospective, admitted, and lower division students interested in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative work
Provide holistic advising and scaffolded support to students pursuing internal undergraduate research programs, from the point of inquiry through the application process
Develop and coordinate programs that support the Research Ready Badge Program
Mentor and supervise the OURS Undergraduate Research Ambassador Program
Teamwork and Collaboration
Work collaboratively with the CUSE team to effectively provide services and support to undergraduate students pursuing competitive careers in research and service.
Collaborate with university academic and administrative units to create pathways for students to pursue co-curricular research programs
Collaborate with faculty/staff and appropriate campus colleges, units, academic departments to identify and increase the number of applicants for competitive internal and external undergraduate research programs.
Administration
Maintain and disseminate information on prestigious external research opportunities (NSF REUs, etc.)
Assist in the development and coordinate the implementation of OURS programmatic and summative assessment
All promotion and communication re: OURS
Newsletters… and Emmas
Maintain records on student advising and student engagement
Supervise the CUSE-OURS graduate assistant
Required Qualifications
Master's degree with three years of relevant professional experience;
Minimum of three years' professional experience in an academic setting on a college/university campus (for example: high impact practice advising; academic advising; advising and mentoring students in an honors program/college, service-learning, or undergraduate research unit).
Evidence of strong organizational and written and oral communication skills;
Understanding of high impact learning opportunities and the best practices of support for students unfamiliar with university systems and culture;
Prior project management and administrative experience and capability;
Experience working with a highly collaborative team;
Demonstrated understanding and commitment to first-generation students, and/or students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education and a demonstrated ability to effectively advise and advocate for those students.
