Job Description:

The Assistant/Associate Director of International and Off-Campus Programs manages the daily operations of education abroad and off-campus study, oversees promotion and advising of existing opportunities, provides support to faculty leading short-term study abroad programs, seeks out new international and off-campus opportunities, and assists with programming support for international students. This position supports the overall mission of the Center for Experience and Opportunity and reports to the Executive Director of the Center for Experience and Opportunity.

Specific Responsibilities

Promote, support and advise education abroad and domestic off-campus study.

  • Oversee the budgets, data management, the international sections of the CEO's annual reports.

  • Provide training and supervision of study-abroad focused graduate assistant and student workers.

  • Manage the off-campus study enrollment management software.

  • Maintain and develop print and web-based information related to study away opportunities, including scholarship opportunities in collaboration with other offices on campus.

  • Vet and select off-campus programs and maintain affiliation agreements with third-party providers.

  • Support curricular integration and promote best practices in study abroad, including faculty-led, short-term programs.

  • Enhance McDaniel-Budapest study abroad program in collaboration with the Director of Academic and Student Affairs in Budapest. Participate in and create programs to promote education abroad.

  • Provide pre-departure orientation sessions and re-entry programs for all long-term study abroad students.

  • Implement and communicate best practices for risk management in education abroad and off-campus programs.

  • Monitor institutional compliance with all regulations and laws related to student travel.

  • Serve as campus representative for the Boren, Gilman, and other national scholarships.Provide assistance to faculty and staff in leading short-term study abroad programs

  • Support faculty in creating short-term experiential opportunities abroad for students including third-party provider services, use of study abroad software, and health and safety best practices.

  • Serve on-call as part of a crisis management team in the event of a crisis abroad involving a short-term program participant or faculty member.

Support international student services

  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO)

  • Coordinate Student Exchange Programs and provide pre-arrival support to international students including registering for McDaniel courses, arranging on-campus housing, obtaining student health records, etc.

  • Advise international students about laws and regulations governing their F-1 visa status, employment policies, social security card application, and important government regulatory matters.

  • Assists students with their applications for Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

  • Assist seniors with their applications for post-grad Optional Practical Training (OPT).

  • Provide advisement to incoming and outgoing exchange students and prospective and admitted international undergraduate students.

  • Provide international student support, including the coordination of airport transportation and participation in international student orientation.

  • Create and sustain programming for international students.

Center for Experience and Opportunity (CEO)

  • Participate in meetings and experientially focused programming connected to the CEO.

  • Integrate study abroad and other internationally focused programming under the overarching umbrella of the CEO.

  • As a member of the CEO, participate in departmental activities as well as university events related to recruitment, alumni relations, and orientation (e.g. Open Houses, Scholars on the Hill, Homecoming, Family Weekend, McDaniel Local - New Student Registration, New Student Orientation, etc.).

This is a full-time position with the following hiring range:

Assistant Director: $48-$51k

Associate Director: $52-$54k

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Assistant Level: Bachelor's degree plus two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Associate Level: Bachelor's degree plus four years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience supporting international students or study abroad in a higher education environment is preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through public speaking and writing; plan, organize, and meet deadlines; demonstrate interest in using new technologies and social media for database management, communication and other daily processes; and exhibit strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.

  • Possess a high level of professionalism and a commitment to international education through active involvement with international education associations.

  • Demonstrated intercultural competence, and experience living or working abroad (at least one semester).

  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends including being available after hours when programs are in session.

  • U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status (as per federal regulatory requirements to be a Designated School Official).

  • Experience working with international students and some demonstrated knowledge of SEVIS software and related federal regulations a plus.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely working in a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.

Physical Abilities

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Sitting for long periods of time.

  • Some bending and stooping when managing events.

  • Limited lifting involved but not more than 10 pounds at a time.

  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal is required.

  • Finger dexterity for typing and use of other office equipment.
