Position Summary

The Assistant/Associate Director of Alumni Relations is a member of the university's centralized alumni relations team, which is responsible for informing and engaging alumni in support of UNC's mission and priorities. Primarily, the position manages the development of UNC's volunteer relationships, programs, and services that build a stronger and active alumni network. In doing so, the position enhances the return on alumni, student, donor and community investment in a UNC education.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Alumni and Community Relations, the Assistant/Associate Director of Alumni Relations operates in an integrated advancement environment where positional objectives align with divisional and university priorities. The position works daily with advancement staff in alumni relations, development, advancement operations, marketing and communication, and the UNC Foundation, and frequently with faculty and staff in the academic colleges, academic affairs, enrollment, student affairs, and diversity, equity and inclusion.

The position must present and maintain professional standards of communication and behavior acceptable to and inclusive of the university's diverse alumni and donor community and in alignment with the high quality of UNC's academic history and traditions. The position must understand and value the importance of creating diverse programs that appeal to diverse alumni populations. In accordance with standardized alumni engagement metrics, the position will employ data and benchmarking research when proposing, developing, and evaluating alumni programs and services.

Job Duties

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Alumni and Community Relations, and in collaboration with faculty, staff and constituents, the Assistant/Associate Director of Alumni Relations functions as a member of the central alumni relations team and is responsibility for developing and delivering the volunteer programs, services, and content that increase and deepen levels of alumni engagement among UNC's strategically defined alumni populations. Utilizing the CASE alumni engagement metrics, the position will carry primary responsibilities for communication, experiential, and volunteer-based engagement for assigned alumni networks, with supportive responsibilities for philanthropic engagement.

20% Communication Engagement:

  • Coordinate and implement targeted alumni communication campaigns designed to strengthen communication between UNC and alumni, and alumni with one another.

  • Efforts will include use of broadcast email, direct mail, social media, phone and in-person engagement to increase alumni awareness, solicit large scale alumni response, acquire alumni data, or result in other institutional calls to action.

  • Collaborate with communications colleagues to contribute to brand content planning, amplification and community moderation across alumni social media channels.

20% Experiential Engagement:

  • Collaborate with event colleagues and campus partners to develop and deliver diverse alumni experiences and events that increase affinity, involvement and/or investment in institutional priorities.

  • Prioritize experiential opportunities that will target under-engaged alumni segments and/or segments assigned by the Assistant Vice President.

40% Volunteer Engagement:

  • Contribute to the development of UNC's volunteer and donor pipeline by managing an assigned engagement portfolio of current and prospective volunteers and volunteer programs.

  • Develop and implement meaningful volunteer opportunities for alumni to support institutional priorities, while increasing rates of new and returning alumni volunteers each year.

10% Philanthropic Engagement:

  • Collaborate with annual giving and development staff to support the implementation and amplification of annual and comprehensive campaign activities, including Bears Give Back Day of Giving and targeted donor engagement opportunities.

10% Operations and Administration:

  • Support divisional operations and other advancement initiatives as assigned by the Assistant Vice President or Vice President.

  • In accordance with advancement operations protocols, utilize the CRM to track and measure engagement efforts and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Education:

Bachelor's degree

2.Experience:

Minimum of two years of progressive responsibility in alumni relations, admissions, career development, external affairs, hospitality management, volunteer management, education program administration, nonprofit programs, or similar constituent engagement role.

3.Certification/Registration/Licensing:

None

Preferred experience in higher education, with understanding of advancement and volunteer engagement.
