Full-time employee of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine on a non-tenure track appointment with full benefits and rank commensurate with the candidate's training and experience. There will also be opportunity to participate in administration and scholarly activity as the candidate's experience and interest evolve with department needs.

The Physician Faculty member serves as a member of their Department, works with any Divisions within the Department, and has academic, curricular, clinical, patient care, and community service experience. The Physician Faculty member is part of a team of physicians and staff that work together to create and support excellent education, scholarly activity, patient care, and community service for the department, college, and university.

Responsibilities

Academics and Teaching:

  • Precept medical students within the clinical setting, by giving formal and informal clinical instruction and supervision.

  • Participate directly in the instruction and development of clinical learning experience in the 4-year continuum of medical student education in geriatrics as defined in the primary care department's division of geriatrics.

  • Participate in the instruction of medical students within the college through lecture, small group experiences (problem and case-based learning). Topics include but are not limited to basic osteopathic manipulative medicine, clinical skills, clinical decision-making (differential diagnosis) and general medical knowledge.

  • Precept students of other colleges or graduate programs.

  • Participate in graduate medical education as it correlates with the college.

Service to the College and University:

  • Participate and serve on committees within the college and the university.

  • Participate in community relations efforts to extend and enhance the visibility and reputation of the Department, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the University of New England.

  • Serve on state, regional, and agencies, bureaus, and committees of the profession and specialty or discipline.

Clinical - MatureCare:

MatureCare is a clinical arm of UNE COM that provides Medical Direction and Clinical Attending services at 12 post-acute/ long term Care /Assisted Living facilities in Central and Southern Maine. The group consists of Primary Care Physicians and Nurse Practitioners that provide Primary Care services within the facilities. MatureCare also provides clinical experiences for UNE COM students' years 1-4 supervised by Faculty Physicians within the group.

Duties include:

  • Provide direct medical care to patients of MatureCare that is patient centered and team oriented.

  • Develop and maintain a financially viable clinic practice that is conducted in an ethical, patient centered practice in accord with generally accepted standards of care.

  • Provide medical direction and oversight in facility-based care.

  • Provide backup or primary services in hospice and palliative care.

  • Review, analyze and determine the significance of a broad array of health care concerns, diagnostic tests and treatment plans including the effective use of consultants.

  • Participate in and provide information for Quality Improvement initiatives for MatureCare and UNE.

  • Participate in on-call coverage including nights and weekends on a shared basis with other practitioners in the same clinical discipline.

  • Provide timely, effective and appropriate documentation of medical services. Provide formal and informal instruction and supervision for medical students, residents and health professionals.

  • Coordinate and monitor patient care rendered by students and residents being supervised.

  • Prepare evaluations of residents and students supervised in a thorough and timely manner.

  • Participate in community relation efforts to enhance the reputation, visibility and credibility of University Health Care and UNE. Conduct and mentor scholarly activity.

  • Understand and comply with OSHA, HIPAA and safety training requirements of UNE as specified in the employee manual.

Qualifications

Board Certified DO Physician in Family Medicine/Internal Medicine - comfort with performance and teaching basic skills in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is required. Allopathic training will be considered on an individual basis if these skills have been obtained.

  • Graduate of an accredited college of Osteopathic Medicine.

  • Curricular and teaching experience in formal and informal teaching, and learner supervision and evaluation (preferred).

  • Clinical practice experience of at least 5 years (preferred).

  • Experience/expertise in holistic long term care medicine.
