The University of Virginia's Center for Comparative Medicine is seeking an Assistant Vivarium Manager. This position works closely with the Center's Vivarium Manager to support ongoing animal research on Grounds. They will be responsible for maintaining and assessing animal health, providing moderately complex support for research labs or facilities, assisting with routine research, writing, and administrative work, and helping to set up a variety of facility equipment and related materials.

The mission of the Center for Comparative Medicine is to support biomedical research and teaching that utilizes laboratory animals. The Center does this in a manner which promotes the policies set by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) whose charge is to oversee compliance by personnel at the University of Virginia with federal regulations and guidelines.

Duties include:

  • Scheduling and managing labor distribution accordingly. This includes matching skilled staff to the needs of the various labs for technical /research support

  • Overseeing husbandry, sanitization practices, and technical/research support according to internal SOPs and external regulations

  • Assuring research activities follow current policies, regulations, and guidelines governing the care and use of animals, which includes writing and maintaining internal vivarium SOPs

  • Writing and keeping SOPs up to date on an annual basis

  • Maintaining inventory, equipment, facility setup, and records relating to operations; including purchasing animals and general supplies, ensuring proper functioning of facility equipment, and coordinating equipment repair and maintenance

  • Hiring, supervising, and training the vivarium staff, focusing on vivarium supervisors and assistant vivarium supervisors

  • Perform all tasks of vivarium supervisors, including inspection and maintenance of animals, disposal of carcasses, tracking and recording data, and keeping detailed records.

  • Oversee and monitor animal husbandry activities

  • Ensure that daily activities are conducted according to biosafety procedures and that other staff are aware of requirements

  • May provide functional supervision in the absence of Vivarium Manager

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: GED/High School Diploma or higher required.

  • Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience working with laboratory animals and 3+ years managing laboratory animal staff.

  • Licensure/Certifications: LAT level certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or higher.

  • Vaccination: This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002.

Physical Demands:

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
