The attorney selected for this position will join approximately 50 attorneys in representing the interests of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina. The main office is located in Columbia, SC, with branches also located in Florence, Greenville, and Charleston. Each of these cities, along with the entire State of South Carolina, offers a wonderful climate and a wide variety of cultural, educational, recreational, and social activities.
The United States Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina is seeking experienced attorneys who have a strong background in prosecuting federal crimes. The incumbent will be responsible for prosecuting and directing the investigation of many types of criminal cases including violent crimes; gun crimes; robberies; assaults; and other litigation-related duties.
Responsibilities will increase, and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement.
Occasional travel - You will be expected to travel for this position.

J.D. degree and active South Carolina member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication.

All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis.
Applicants must possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State of South Carolina and have at least three years of post-J.D. experience. The South Carolina Bar does not grant reciprocity to attorneys who are members of other state bars and local rules of the United States District Court require SC bar membership for admission to practice before the U.S. District Court.
Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability to accurately and precisely identify and articulate critical issues in an investigation and prosecution.
Applicants must possess excellent written and oral communication abilities and courtroom skills.
Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills.
Applicants must demonstrate good judgment.
Applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, law enforcement agents, courthouse staff, and judges.
Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to work hard and function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.
Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings.

Department of Justice Policies
Veterans' Preference: There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must indicate their preference in response to the appropriate question in their assessment questionnaire (it is also recommended that information is included in their cover letter or resume) and they must submit supporting documentation (e.g., DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) which verifies their eligibility for preference. Suitability and Citizenship: It is the policy of the Department to achieve a drug-free workplace and persons selected for employment will be required to pass a drug test which screens for illegal drug use prior to final appointment. Employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory adjudication of a background investigation.
