The Assistant Telecommunications & Network Designer will work on an integrated design team within our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) division to perform the following duties:

  • Design of various types of private communications networks such as MPLS, CDMA, SONET, Microwave, LMR and licensed/unlicensed radio. Follow all company, client and project design and drafting standards.

  • Assist with a full range of drawing production work including problem analysis, network topology layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Assist with a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and cables, and refining rough sketches.

  • Assist with initial rough designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

  • Assist with analyzing reports, drawings, and calculations; create and maintain BOM and cable schedules.

  • Work closely with engineering project teams and field personnel to complete and review projects within scope, budget and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into physical design and layouts.

  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and two years related experience or associate's degree and four years related experience or five years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Strong understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

  • Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings. Strong preference for experience in ArcGIS, Autodesk Revit, Bentley Substation, and/or AutoCAD Electrical.

  • Basic knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of engineering discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks. Working knowledge in AC/DC power systems, communication network design, network protocols, programming network equipment such as routers and switches, and serial/ethernet wiring.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.

The Network Design Engineer will be responsible for engineering design and technical oversight of network deployment projects. Major responsibilities for the Network Design Engineer will include: * Design MPLS networks over dark fiber, DWDM, and/or microwave utilizing client standards or developing new standards. Project deliverables may include: * Network topology plans * Physical Network Topology (GIS) * Network Schematics * Network design reports: * Routing protocol selection * LSP design * IP address planning * Naming/numbering standards * Capacity planning for applications * Quality of service (QoS) implantation * Network synchronization strategy * Router security design * Application security design * Application cutover plans * Circuit records * IP address assignments * Router configurations * Lab and production test plans * Identify and troubleshoot network performance degradations * Provide support to customers in field of expertise * Assist in the creation of a MPLS deployment training program * Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced tools and techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods. * Identify, communicate and resolve issues on projects as needed. * Work in multi-vendor environments (Nokia, Cisco, Juniper) with typical project requirements to integrate multiple vendors. * Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members. * Work with the project manager to establish project schedule and lead the engineering team to meet deadlines. * Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to client's satisfaction and that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines. * Perform design quality reviews. * Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel to develop relationships with key client points of contact. * Prepare proposals and assist in presentations. * Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications * As least a two-year degree in a telecommunications related field. * Must have a minimum of 4 years of work experience on network design, implementation, and optimization. * Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. * Must be capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
