JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The School of Visual Arts within the College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park campus) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Digital Arts and Media Design beginning August 2024.

This is a full-time, 36-week non-tenure track appointment funded for one year with excellent possibility of reappointment.

We are particularly interested in qualified candidates with excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative disposition, and a strong commitment to teamwork who can contribute, through their teaching and creative activity, to all levels of the Digital Arts and Media Design curriculum and majors.

Position Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong design and production skills in interactive digital media with analytic strength. Experience in developing 3D applications using game engines such as Unity/Unreal is desired, as well as programming/scripting in languages among C++, C#, Java/Processing, and JavaScript. Experience with AR/VR, VFX, and Concept Art are also desirable.

Candidate should have an active engagement with game design, new media art, and/or in the interaction design industry and the critical and theoretical implications of the field.

The ideal candidate will work with existing program faculty to help shape the undergraduate experience of the Digital Arts and Design majors, related emphasis areas/tracks, and teach a wide range of coursework in Interactive Art and Media Design.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach 3D animation courses covering modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering, and compositing.

  • Teach production skills necessary to create, texture, rig, animate, light, and render 3D assets for animated films, digital games, and immersive media.

  • Teach additional digital art courses related to areas of expertise.

  • Teach three courses per semester (Fall and Spring).

  • Join with digital art faculty to cultivate a lively animation studio culture and help set production standards that enhance student creative outcomes.

  • Work with digital art faculty on curriculum updates including developing new courses and revising existing coursework.

  • Participate in the guidance and assessment of students, portfolio development, independent studies, internships, and capstone thesis projects.

  • Encourage our students in developing creative works as part of a socially and culturally engaged research university.

  • Participate in service to the unit, college, university, and professional organizations.

Required:

  • A terminal degree: MFA, Ph.D., or equivalent in Digital Art, Digital Design, New Media, or related field.

  • College-level teaching experience and commitment to undergraduate instruction.

  • Experience in curriculum development including new courses and revising, assessing, and maintaining existing courses.

  • Demonstrated commitment to creative activity, knowledge of digital art and design, and new media technologies as applied to critical and contemporary practice and of contemporary art/design theory and criticism.

  • The successful candidate must be fluent in English and possess a strong commitment to keeping abreast with the latest developments in the field of digital arts and media design.

  • Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice with regard to contemporary curricula development, inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies and working with a diverse faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
