Summary

This position serves as classroom Teacher Aide for an early childhood classroom with a direct focus on infants, toddlers, and pre-school age children. The Teacher Aide will work collaboratively with a Lead Teacher to ensure the successful operation of a classroom. The Teacher Aide also works with a team of other classroom teachers and family members to achieve positive outcomes for children of all abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in implementing Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards in classrooms.

  • Provide assistance with the preparation of appropriate daily lesson plans in advance that include both indoor and outdoor activities; are individualized and based on the child's own needs, interest and schedules; and, include multicultural educational materials and activities, family-style meals and other elements, as appropriate.

  • Assist with parent communication regarding children's functions and activities.

  • Assist in organizing the classroom according to developmental levels and individual need of the children, ensuring: the development of trust and emotional security; opportunities to explore a variety of sensory and motor experiences; opportunities for the development of self awareness, autonomy, and self expression; and opportunities for gross and fine motor development.

  • Assist in ensuring classrooms are homelike, safe, sanitary, and free of clutter.

  • Assist in organizing the classroom in rudimentary learning centers that are well defined, rotating materials routinely to create a stimulating environment. Provide for diaper changing and toilet training functions in the classroom in a safe, sanitary and developmentally appropriate manner.

  • Promote the development of secure relationships with children assigned by assuring primary and continuity of care. Relate to children in a calm, caring, nurturing, soothing manner, responding to all cries, babbles, and talks, using appropriate child guidance techniques at all times.

  • Work in a team setting with all staff to determine individual needs of children including children with disabilities or special needs.

  • Consult regularly with appropriate service providers, consultants, and staff regarding child development concerns for all children including children with disabilities and special needs.

  • Stay involved with the children at all times during the day.

  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe learning environment at all time.

  • Provide meals and snacks to the children according to their age, development and needs.

  • Feed infants according to their home schedule, holds them every time they are fed, and shares information about their eating with their parents daily. Assist with family style dining and implements according to program policy and procedures, and Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards.

  • Involve parents in all aspects of the classroom. Greet parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a smooth transition into the center, a positive home-center connection and a family partnership.

  • Assist with maintaining supplies.

  • Report to work at scheduled times and maintain good attendance; perform all duties in a timely and professional manner.

  • Participate with a positive attitude and behavior in all program activities.

  • Continue professional growth by participating in ongoing education, training programs, workshops and conferences in an effort to provide individualized care and education in an effort to serve all children including children with disabilities and special needs.

  • Perform other duties assigned and reasonably within the scope of the duties listed above.

  • Performs assigned duties in accordance with agency policy, grants and contract requirements.

  • Performs required duties in a manner that demonstrates compliance with Sunbeam's Culturally Competent Practice Policy as well as other agency policy and procedure and those of grants/contracts so that work of the agency is systematized and effective

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED required; with a Child Development Associate (CDA), Child Care Professional credential (CCP) or Certificate of Mastery (CM) OR working towards AA/BA with a minimum of 9 credit hours in Early Childhood Education.

Additional Job Requirements

  • Clearance of background check and drug screen

  • TB screen required

  • Physical required.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English ideal.

Computer Equipment And Software Requirements

  • Some knowledge of computer applications, including word-processing software in a Windows environment ideal; and the ability to learn and master other computer technology /software programs as needed.

  • Experience in use of standard office equipment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically interact with children, including talk, hear, sit, stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and lift and or move children and items of up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have excellent command of English language and grammar, both verbal and written. Must be able to manually operate and use a computer. Must be able to clearly hear and understand telephone conversations.

Work Environment

The employee will work in a classroom environment, in close quarters with other staff and small children; some time each day will spent outside, in seasonal weather conditions, and on an uneven playground area. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to loud; frequent chaotic situations will occur, characteristic to working with ages 0 5 years. Employee must expect exposure to strong odors such as soiled diapers and clothes, and poor hygiene. May come into contact with childhood diseases and blood on occasion.
