The Team

The Iowa Department of Transportation's Highway Division is made up of more than 1,000 employees. These dedicated folks provide the support and services to maintain 114,000 lane miles of roadway with over 4,000 pieces of equipment located in more than 150 facilities statewide. District 3 includes 220 employees within a 19-county area of northwest Iowa. This position works as part of a survey team that includes assistant survey party chiefs, survey party chiefs and professional land surveyors.

Location: District 3 Office, Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa

Shift: Full-Time (40 hours/week), Days, Monday through Thursday, 6:45 AM - 5:15 PM; Occasional travel overnight is possible.

What You'll Do

  • Obtain engineering, topographic and land survey information in the field needed to develop and construct highway improvement projects on the primary road and interstate systems.
  • Perform construction survey to assist construction staff and contractors in the accurate completion of construction and maintenance projects.
  • Collect data from plans, electronic files, and survey records to prepare for field work.
  • Perform engineering, trigonometry, and survey calculations to accurately complete survey work.
  • Operate survey instruments including level, total stations, GPS, and data collectors.
  • Download field data and perform quality control checks to ensure accuracy of the data.
  • Contacts landowners, utility companies and others to coordinate the collection of survey data.
  • Generate corner certificates and plats using computer aided design (CAD) software.

Additional requirements: 

  • Must have experience using survey instruments including electronic total stations, global positioning equipment, survey levels, and understanding of feature and linking codes. Bentley MicroStation software is used.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Three years of full-time work experience in engineering survey, which included the operation of survey instruments.

2) A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in civil engineering, construction engineering, or photogrammetry equals one year of full-time experience.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work in survey, construction, maintenance, or design as a Highway Technician Associate, Highway Technician, Highway Technician Senior, Construction Technician Assistant, Construction Technician, or Construction Technician Senior.
