Job Summary:

Energy Services' Utilities Distribution organization is responsible for operating and maintaining the distribution systems that delivers utility services to campus buildings. Utility systems include chilled water, domestic water, high pressure steam, storm and sanitary sewers, and natural gas.

Summary of the position responsibilities include:

Assist the Utilities Distribution Supervisor to schedule work, assign Utilities Distribution Plumbers to tasks, and oversee performance of tasks including provision of supplies, tools and equipment, communication among and between entities, and data collection and notation.

Assist the Utilities Distribution Supervisor with installation, maintenance, and repair of the various utilities systems on campus, including domestic water, steam and condensate, natural gas, chilled water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer.

Assist Utilities Distribution Supervisor with various administrative tasks in support of efficient operations.

Due to communication expectations of the position, the employee will be required to maintain a personal cell phone and will be required to be continually available during and after normal working hours.

Must be able to respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management regardless of the weather conditions.

Requires working some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies and may require work during nonbusiness hours which include evenings, weekends, holidays, and other times when the University is closed. Emergencies frequently involve difficult working conditions.

The employee is required to operate heavy equipment, work in heat and cold above and below ground, use basic hand and power tools, maintaining them in good working condition.

Work involves regular exposure to uncomfortable and hazardous working conditions, both indoors and out, such as extreme temperatures, moving machinery, engulfment, ACM, confined spaces, trench excavations, electrical sources, potential hazardous chemicals, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.

Required to work safely, adhere to all safety requirements, and promote a safe environment. Employee must use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

PPE requirements include but are not limited to hardhats, safety glasses, leather boots, and fire resistant clothing. These items are provided and not for personal use.

Position requires regular physical exertion to complete assignments.

Must be able to routinely move about or remain in a stationary position 25% of the time. Constantly positions self to fulfill the duties of the position which include overseeing and performing work in underground confined spaces, trenches, tunnels, cramped areas, and operating heavy equipment.

Occasionally ascends/descends heights to accomplish work.

Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of sometimes very heavy equipment and supplies. Some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies.

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

High School/GED and six years of prior work experience in a municipal utilities service organization. Post-secondary education may be substituted for experience.

Have Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) Class D Water and Waste-Water license within 12 months of hire and maintain license for duration of employment.

Become industry certified in polyethylene fusion welding within 12 months of hire.

Certified for natural gas "operator qualified" status from approved training facility within 12 months of hire.

Training programs for the required certifications will be provided by OSU.

Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

Knowledgeable in installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical distribution systems.

Basic knowledge of utility and mechanical codes.

Ability to manage and motivate people.

The person in this position frequently communicates with customers and employees who have inquiries on work and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Skills in evaluating the work of others to ensure adherence to stated standards.

Ability to communicate effectively and accurately.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with contractors and departmental representatives.

Ability to work independently

Ability to become proficient in the use of "AiM" Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

Vocational/Technical training in mechanical utility distribution or a related field.

Two years post-secondary education in a technical field with four years working in a utility distribution organization or related field and supervisory experience; or a High School graduate/GED and six years successful work experience in a utility distribution organization or related field and supervisory experience.

Have upon hire the following certifications and maintain for duration of employment: Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) Class D Water and Waste-Water license.
