The Animal Resources Center at The University of Texas at Austin covers approx. 150,000 sq. ft. of research animal space. The Animal Resources Center is responsible for managing three centralized animal facilities as well as some smaller satellite locations.

Purpose

This position will provide support to the Animal Resources Center by serving as a point of contact for investigators and animal care staff regarding animal handling and husbandry as needed in all ARC vivaria. This person will serve as a backup for Animal Facility Supervisors and assume responsibility for day-to-day tasks in their absence. This position will also be equipped to provide direct animal husbandry care for all species on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates the schedules and activities of the staff in collaboration with the Assistant Director of operations and oversees completion of assigned staff responsibilities.

  • Supervises animal attendants that float between each of the ARC facilities and deploys them to facilities as needed during absences.

  • Evaluates the performance of the staff during coverage and provides feedback to the facility supervisor.

  • Identifies inconsistencies between processes at different facilities and suggests solutions to facility supervisor or Assistant Director.

  • Develops and implements schedules for cage changing and sanitizing equipment, rooms, and facilities.

  • Maintains animal facilities, cage wash areas and loading docks to meet the standards of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal and local animal welfare laws and regulations.

  • Orders feed, bedding and supplies and maintains sufficient inventories to meet the needs of the animal care program.

  • Collects and maintains monthly animal care records.

  • Performs animal husbandry and animal cage wash duties as assigned per operational needs. This includes providing animal care to all species housed in ARC managed facilities. Performs daily health checks, changes cages, pens and other animal housing systems. Cleans and sanitizes animal rooms, cages and pens.

  • Drives departmental vehicles to transport animals and equipment as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned per operational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED.

  • At least 5 years of related laboratory experience with 3 years including technical experience in a research or laboratory animal resources facility.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry and animal cage wash.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of customers.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and complete a physical abilities WorkSteps test.

  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including rotating weekends and holidays.

  • Must be willing and able to drive all departmental vehicles.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • AALAS certification at the RLAT or higher level.

  • Knowledge of laboratory animal industry standards and work methodologies.

  • Prior supervisory experience.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$55,000 + depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
