General Description:

The Merced College Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Instruction (VPI) will embark on a journey of innovation, empowerment, and transformative leadership!

As the Chief Instructional Officer and Accreditation Liaison Office, the VPI will be at the forefront of shaping educational policy, working with faculty to design cutting-edge academic programs, and fostering an environment where student success is paramount. Their dynamic leadership will drive the advancement of student learning, optimize enrollment management strategies, and ensure fiscal accountability for instructional areas.

With oversight of multiple instructional divisions, including workforce development, learning resources, economic and workforce development, career technical programs, STEM, performing arts, and more, the VPI will lead a team of instructional deans, managers, and classified professionals towards excellence. Their influence extends beyond the main campus, encompassing the Los Banos Campus instructional programs, distance education initiatives, the Business Resource Center, and community outreach endeavors.

The VPI's responsibilities also include the curriculum development process and support, faculty development, program review, and accreditation liaison duties. The VPI will collaborate closely with stakeholders at all levels - from faculty and students to college committees and other divisions - to ensure that instructional goals align with district priorities and meet the evolving needs of our diverse student body.

As a key member of the executive leadership team, the VPI will play a pivotal role in driving the College's educational master planning goals and strategic implementation activities. Their expertise will be instrumental in addressing accreditation standards, strategic planning initiatives, and institutional effectiveness efforts.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as the Chief Instructional Officer and Accreditation Liaison Office for the College

  • Leads transformational change with a student-focused mindset

  • Represents the College as one of the executive leaders internally and externally

  • Leads, plans, organizes, directs, supervises, and evaluates the initiatives, priorities, and activities of instructional programs and assigned learning support services

  • Fosters an integrated process for planning, budgeting, analysis, goal-setting and implementation of goals with a focus on curriculum and program development

  • Leads a collaborative and strategic approach to enrollment management

  • Leads the development of different learning modalities such as online learning

  • Functions effectively as a member of the executive leadership team and works well with persons at all levels throughout the college

  • Assists, through leadership, in the fulfillment of the college's educational master planning goals and objectives and strategic priorities

  • Provides opportunities for involvement by faculty, classified professionals, and student leadership, as appropriate, in consideration of policies and procedures

  • Provides dynamic academic leadership, fostering an environment that encourages innovation and effective teaching and learning support

  • Provides vision, leadership, and support to guide academic programs

  • Provides leadership for integration and collaboration of instruction with student services

  • Fosters a culture of student success and guides the college in creating systemic change to meet the needs of underprepared students

  • Provides leadership in student learning outcomes, learning assessment, and accreditation

  • Provides leadership in instructional innovation and adoption of new technology

  • Establishes and maintains liaison with community groups, educational institutions, business, industry, government and legislative bodies, developing partnerships which result in improved service.

  • Provides for the orientation and professional development of personnel in area of responsibility

  • Trains, supervises, evaluates and directs the work of assigned personnel, including instructional deans, educational administrators, classified managers, faculty, and classified professionals

  • Fosters a culture of evidence, effective decision-making and communication

  • Promotes trust, inclusion, and commitment to the College's participatory governance structures and processes

  • Identifies resources for program development and improvement, seeks and applies for grants and other specialized funding, coordinates and facilitates applications for grants and specialized funding

  • Prepares and monitors budgets for areas of responsibility

  • Develops, prepares, presents, and submits reports regarding areas of responsibility

  • Maintains currency of knowledge regarding new developments and innovations related to areas of responsibility

  • Promotes the effective implementation and uses of technology in areas of responsibility

  • Assures compliance with accreditation standards, including quality assurance for all course offerings regardless of location or delivery method

  • Other duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Master's degree from an acceptable accredited institution AND
  • One year leadership experience reasonably related to the position AND
  • Commitment to nurturing and creating a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.

License or Certificate:

  • Valid California driver's license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctorate from an acceptable accredited institution AND
  • Progressive experience in educational administration, preferably within a community college or university environment AND
  • Successful experience in: leadership, organization, planning, development, staffing, evaluation, budget and/or supervision, community college or lower division teaching, curriculum and program development, instructional innovation, accreditation, student learning outcomes design, learning assessment of SLOs, and implementation with colleagues, online instruction and learning support for online students, the broad range of instructional areas to be overseen, addressing the needs of the underprepared student, budget management, enrollment management, advocacy for areas of responsibility, expanding funding and program opportunities through grants and partnerships
