Assistant Superintendent, School Leadership (ASSL)

The Superintendent's Cabinet Leadership team is responsible for creating a performance culture that ensures a student-centered, equity-based and results-oriented system of schools to address the needs of the 21st Century learner, meets the expectations and vision of Henry County families, and aligns with the Board of Education's Plan of Action, core beliefs, and commitments to the community.

The Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership provides leadership and oversight to assigned District schools and school programs, driving significant student achievement gains at the school level. The ASSL is responsible for helping to ensure effective principals are in place at each school. The ASSL is also responsible for developing a reliable leadership development plan and succession plan for assigned schools. The ASSL will be responsible for using multiple sources of data to guide the continuous improvement of assigned schools.

Essential Functions

  • Serve as a key member of the Superintendent's Cabinet Leadership team, supporting the strategic leadership expectations of the Chief.

  • Positively and proactively participate in leadership meetings, representing the Superintendent and district priorities.

  • Ensure strong, on-going communication with Principals and district leaders.

  • Manage performance and conduct annual evaluations of assigned school principals.

  • Assist with driving the successful integration of evidence-based strategies to ensure the performance growth and school climate health of all District schools.

  • Align the district's annual strategic priorities and long-range strategic plan to assigned schools, create a shared understanding of challenges at the school level, and identify opportunities for improved student achievement.

  • Create collaborative and effective communication channels between Principals and parents.

  • Effectively lead, coach and mentor assigned school leaders in ways that drive significant student performance gains on state and national metrics.

  • Support the professional development of Principals to ensure they have the skills to select, develop, support, and evaluate staff, and hold them accountable to positive reflection of the district, leading teaching and learning, and driving student performance gains at their schools.

  • Support assigned Principals to ensure high quality implementation of instructional expectations, including balanced instruction, standards, and formative assessment.

  • Lead assigned Principals to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of their leadership, ensuring strategies are student-focused and aligned with the district.

  • Support assigned Principals in creating positive school cultures.

  • Establish and maintain clear, consistent interactions with parents, families and community partners to receive input and feedback on the effectiveness of assigned schools, to improve family engagement, and to resolve concerns.

  • Work in collaboration with the Human Resources Division to identify, prepare, place, and retain great principals.

  • Partner with Human Resources to anticipate and plan for staffing needs, meet all staffing timelines, and communicate school staffing.

  • Work closely with Learning & Performance and assigned school leadership teams to develop, implement, and monitor Continuous School Improvement Plans (CSIP) that aim to improve student performance.

  • Attend meetings and trainings as required.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master's degree, required. Georgia Educator certificate in Educational Leadership, required.

  • Minimum of three years administrative/supervisory experience, required.

  • Prior building level and/or district office administrative experience, required.

  • Knowledge of public education and driving improvement in student achievement.

  • Using quantitative and qualitative information in an instructional setting to drive decision-making and evaluation.

  • Strong strategic planning and organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with systems thinking and the ability to analyze organizational situations from structural, human capital, political, and cultural perspectives.

  • Analyze complex situations and synthesize information carefully to develop an effective course of action.

  • Communicate tactfully, appropriately, and effectively with individuals and groups.

  • Exhibit a consistent sense of urgency around improving student performance, closing the achievement gap, and making the instructional improvements needed to do so.

  • Ability to make challenging decisions, remain professional under stress, and possess exceptional judgement.

  • Coach others to drive student achievement gains.

  • Work collaboratively to build consensus while also delivering exceptional results.

  • Collaborate and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Be flexible, resilient and adaptable to changing priorities.

  • Ability to abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.

  • Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.

  • Ability to be present at the physical worksite.

  • Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.

  • May be required to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.

Accountability

The ASSL will be held to accountability measures mutually identified and agreed upon with the Division Chief.
