The approximate base compensation range is posted, but the actual offer will reflect our total compensation and benefits package. The offer will be determined by a number of factors including the selected candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, FTE, number of months worked, as well as internal equity among our team.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Safety and Security, this position is responsible for the operations of the Security Department, which operates on a 24/7 basis servicing the College of St. Scholastica, the St. Scholastica Monastery, and the Benedictine Living Community. This includes supervision of physical safety and security operations, compliance with all related local, state, or federal laws and/or regulations, and parking registration and enforcement. The Assistant Safety and Security Director develops, administers, and evaluates all safety and security functions, programs, national trends related to campus safety and security, and legal issues impacting higher education.

The Assistant Director proactively addresses safety and security concerns, implements action plans, and consistently enforces related policies. The Assistant Director will collaborate closely with other departments to ensure regular fire, safety, and security inspections are conducted within all college and Monastery facilities. They will also assist in conducting investigations and coordinate all matters involving parking, including the issuance and control of parking permits and enforcement.

In addition, the Assistant Director provides administrative and operational guidance for departmental staff, and this position will be considered a shift working position, where the Assistant Director is responsible for covering the day security shift Monday - Friday and working additional security shifts on an as-needed basis. The Assistant Director will also work closely with local emergency services. The Assistant Director will work with the Title IX coordinator on investigations as necessary. The Assistant Director shall assist in coordinating emergency response and campus messaging with the marketing and communication team.

Key Results/Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain short and long-term strategic safety and security plans and operations.

  • Assure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and reporting requirements in higher education.

  • Assist in the coordination of the College's Emergency Response planning.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide security day shift coverage Monday-Friday and as needed to support shift coverage.

  • Oversee and manage the security reporting software (i.e.. daily and incident reporting)

  • Oversee the daily and incident reporting process and disseminate reports as necessary.

  • Oversee and maintain daily safety and security operations.

  • Assist Security Officers in the staffing of the day-to-day departmental coverage for the institution.

  • Work with Security Officers to adjust operations and resolve operational issues as they arise.

  • Hiring/training new campus security officers.

  • Coach and mentor campus security officers and issue corrective actions if needed.

  • Oversee the campus security officers time reporting (payroll), vacation requests and sick time.

  • Oversee and manage the College's parking permit and enforcement software, permit registration process and enforcement of the College's parking policies.

  • Collaborate with various campus departments and employees to assure safety and security goals are met and exceeded.

  • Maintain strong interpersonal connections with students, faculty, staff, and external guests.

  • Assure that the proper industry standard training programs and requirements are implemented and maintained to meet departmental and institutional needs and expectations.

  • Develop and manage strong working relationships with external agencies and organizations (such as the Duluth Police and Fire Departments) that support institutional safety and security operations.

  • Develop and present all safety & security related student-oriented programs and presentations.

  • Develop and maintain emergency operation plans for all buildings and events.

  • Investigate incidents in support of campus conduct and Title IX processes.

  • Support in the resolution of facilities-related incidents during non-business hours.

  • Maintain compliance with state and federal reporting requirements such as the "Clery Act" and "Title IX" as well as the dissemination of those reports to internal and external constituencies.

  • Review and submit reports related to on-campus injuries and accidents and off-campus community related injuries and accidents.

  • Serve as a member of the College's Safety and Health committee, and other supportive committees.

  • Serve on the Facilities Manager-on-Duty weekend and Holiday rotation schedule.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Criminology, Police Science, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field with a combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to five years that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills & abilities listed above.

  • 2+ years of management/supervisory experience. Experience leading and managing teams.

  • Demonstrated experience working with and or supporting equity inclusion initiatives.

  • Extensive familiarity with security hardware and software and their applications.

  • Certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED, or can be certified upon hire.

  • Successful budget management experience.

  • Higher Education Safety and Security Experience

  • Familiarity with state and federal law and reporting requirements in a higher education setting such as Clery Act, Violence Against Women Act, and Title IX reporting.

  • Ability to make accurate decisions reflecting sound judgment, knowledge of law & adherence to established guidelines & procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain programs and projects.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

  • Valid driver's license

  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 3 months

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check
