Job Responsibilities

Coordinates the Roadway Design Quality Assurance unit including conducting engineering-based design reviews on all Department and consultant prepared roadway construction plans, technical reports and design criteria. Works under the guidance of Quality Assurance Engineer to coordinate tasks, workload, etc. for the unit.
Coordinates with Regional Production Groups, Traffic Engineering, Right of Way, FHWA, other areas of the Department and consultants. Provides engineering resources to assist with the evaluation of complex encroachment permits and other roadway design related issues for District personnel. Coordinates with Roadway Design Support Policy Engineer on periodic updates to the SCDOT's policy as related to road design.
Represents Roadway Design Support at meetings and other scoping trips. Provides engineering resources to evaluate roadway related design exception requests, including maintaining a file of the original signed design exceptions. Verifies mileage and pay items prior to printing and letting.
Provides engineering resources to assist with the training of Department and consultant personnel on engineering topics related to roadway design. Provides engineering resources to support the Legal section in cases involving the Department. Verified letting plans by cross referencing Project Programming System, plans and proposal ensuring final construction pay item quantities are consistent. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and four (4) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural
environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
