Description of Work

INTERNAL POSTING _ Only current employees of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in a permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) will be considered.

  • Hiring Range - $48,051 - $81,686

The primary purpose for this organizational unit is to administer contract construction projects in order to provide documentation that demonstrates all work and materials are in conformance with the contract, plans, and specifications. This includes staffing projects to provide construction stake out, inspection, sampling, and testing.

This position serves as assistant resident engineer, supervising employees responsible for stakeout and inspection of roads and structures in contract construction. It is responsible for promoting a safe working environment.

The successful applicant will possess working knowledge of DOT policies and procedures. Duties also include keeping records necessary for preparation of monthly estimates and final estimates. Safety toe shoes are required with 30 days of hiring.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must meet both the education requirements and all posted knowledge, skills and abilities in order to qualify.

  • Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts?

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying

  • Experience using computers or electronic tablets

  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups

Additional Expectations:

Ability to understand, explain and administer contracts, interpret construction plans, provision, standards and specifications. Must be proficient at plan reading, highway engineering calculations and survey instruments necessary to supervise the stake-out of line and grade for roadways and structures.

Must be able to communicate with contractors to ensure compliance with contract, plans, standards and specifications Communicate, establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, contractors' personnel and general public. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing project inspections. Train, coordinate and supervise lower level transportation technicians.

Night and weekend work may be required. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
