Job Description:

The Assistant Research Professor will play a leading role in advancing geospatial research, focusing on the development and application of cutting-edge geospatial technologies to support grant-related projects at the intersection of geosciences and heritage studies. The successful candidate will support grant-funded research by: creating and managing cartographic materials and geospatial databases, developing and maintaining metadata, ensuring data management plans and maintenance measures, and providing analytical support. The successful candidate will also oversee the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment in the computing environment, ensuring alignment with the objectives set by Principal Investigators and the Director of the School of Geosciences. The successful candidate will also participate in proposal preparation and be expected to obtain or contribute to external funding to support their position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead efforts in geospatial research and development, with a strong emphasis on applying these skills to grant-funded projects.
  • Design and maintain advanced geospatial databases and manage metadata to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
  • Oversee specialized equipment and manage the computing environment to support ongoing research initiatives.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including GPS and digital documentation surveys, contributing to the collection and postproduction of 3D, imaging, and geospatial data.
  • Collaborate with research teams on the development of new funding proposals, grant applications, and contracts.
  • Contribute to creating final project deliverables, reports, whitepapers, and submissions to refereed journals, conference presentations, and proceedings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field with strong relevance to heritage studies, such as Anthropology, Architecture, or Archaeology

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in using advanced geospatial technologies, including 3D laser scanning, 360-degree imaging, and related tools.
  • Proficient in field techniques for GPS and geospatial documentation, particularly in heritage, environmental, and movement ecology contexts.
  • Familiarity with AI and generative AI (gAI) applications in the context of GIS and imaging technologies.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, with a particular emphasis on AI tools and imaging applications.
  • Comprehensive expertise in GIS software, especially Esri's ArcGIS Pro suite.
  • Strong background in remote sensing and LiDAR processing, with practical applications experience.
  • Extensive experience with online and data services, including ArcGIS Online, Experience Builder, Hub, Drone Mapping applications, and similar. Capable of developing web and mobile applications using Esri tools such as Dashboard, Experience Builder, Survey 123, and WebApp Builder.
  • Familiarity with pointcloud data processing pipelines and workflows relating to terrestrial laser scanning and experience with aerial and terrestrial LiDAR use in GIS.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop GIS tools and applications for complex spatial analysis.
  • Strong collaborative ethic, with a commitment to exploring new technologies and delivering research outcomes on time.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, coupled with excellent communication, critical thinking, and writing abilities.
