Recruitment Range: $33,272 - $47,062

This is a range.  Selected candidate's salary will be determined within this range

based on qualifications, equity, and funding at the time of hire.

Primary Purpose of Position: 

The Assistant Registrar is responsible for providing general assistance and support to the Museum Registrars.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and maintaining manual and electronic legal documents and files, entering data and images into the Museum's collection management database; processing acquisitions, assisting museum registrars with loans and exhibitions; overseeing digital photography and imaging of the collection; and other general tasks of an assistant registrar.

  • Assists registrar and handlers with packing shipping, receiving, and inventory.

  • Works closely with curators, preparators, conservators, photographers, education and development staff, museum donors and patrons on a variety of projects and collections.

  • Concerning upcoming projects, this position will have emphasis on re-housing artifacts within a team setting to prepare and execute a total permanent collection move off-site during a building renovation.

  • Edits collection database (using Rediscovery's Proficio system), data standards, data input, reports and forms; implements regular inventory projects; disseminates information as needed to other sections, researchers, and students.

  • Interacts with patrons and answers questions about the collection, provides behind-the-scenes tours as needed, and when needed, provides courier service.

  • When it comes to Exhibitions, the assistant registrar prepares incoming receipts, schedules and supervises packing, shipping, condition reporting and object movement for temporary exhibitions; produces reports of works for permanent collection exhibitions as needed, coordinates object movement and record keeping.

  • Position supervises interns and volunteers as needed.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must have strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail.

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 30 days of employment.

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.

  • Must have the ability to multitask and meet deadline-driven projects.

  • Must have the ability and dexterity to do close work with a computer monitor and perform repetitive hand movements.

  • Must have the ability to collaborate with peers in developing appropriate exhibitions and programs.

  • Must have the ability to handle artifacts safely, and place numbers on

artifacts.

  • Must have ability to climb and descend ladders, sit and stand.

  • Must be able to work after hours and weekends when necessary.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience in collections management principles, procedures, and methods used in the handling, storage, physical care and preservation, to ensure the safety and accessibility of original collection objects.

  • Demonstrated experience using and maintaining a collection information system and database, such as Re:discovery Proficio system or similar.

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications (Examples: Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience using Adobe Creative Photoshop.

  • Demonstrated experience using Re:discovery Proficio software.

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Access.

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of museum or related work

or

Division Description: 

The North Carolina Museum of History Division promotes the understanding of the history and material culture of North Carolina for the educational benefit of North Carolinians. Through collections and historical interpretation, its museums encourage citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations. The Division is represented by the flagship, the NC Museum of History, and has six regional museums throughout the state.
