The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) Halifax Public Defender Office has an opening for an attorney who is committed to advocating on behalf of indigent clients. The attorney will handle trial and appellate cases.

The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Assistant Public Defender reports to the Public Defender of the Halifax Office and is employed at will. Duties: Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts, as well as identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients and researching, writing, and arguing appeals before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission is required for consideration for this fulltime, salaried position. (Applicants pending bar results may be considered for a Fellowship opportunity with a monthly stipend. Upon successfully passing the Bar Exam would be eligible to apply for any vacant Assistant Public Defender positions.) Knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence is required along with experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications and skills in keyboarding.

The qualified candidate must have the ability to argue legal positions effectively and persuasively, as well as master subject matter and prepare cases thoroughly. The ability to learn and accept constructive criticism is important as well as the ability to respond quickly and effectively in addressing issues and questions. The qualified applicant will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and remain organized. A valid driver's license and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working with criminal defense of indigent clients is preferred.

Mechatronics provides the training required for citizens to excel in understanding a ?systems?? or holistic approach to the complexities of digital automation and machine maintenance as they learn the programming, troubleshooting and maintenance of the various components of a mechatronics based system. Duties include of the CTA Mechatronics Instructor include, but are not limited to: 1) develops, implements, and evaluate the CTA Mechatronics Program with a focus on preparing trainees with industry recognized credentials in demand by local and regional employers, 2) performs classroom and laboratory instructional duties in the Mechatronics Program utilizing the distributed model, 3) provides a training program for high school students, and 4) works collaboratively with others, internal and external to the SVHEC. Minimum Qualifications Considerable instructional experience in secondary education; Possesses a thorough and accurate knowledge of industrial maintenance and mechatronics with ability to successfully communicate in a learning environment; Ability to connect subject matter with related fields; Ability to establish meaningful learning methods that result in measurable outcomes; Possess customer service experience with working knowledge of team practices and procedures; Possess in-depth understanding (practitioner) of mechatronics principals, programming, processes, set-up and operation of a variety of advanced manufacturing technology with emphasis on automation technology and Ability to work with educational and corporate partners as well as high school, adult non-traditional learners, and other workforce stakeholders. High School Graduate or equivalent Preferred Qualifications Associates or Bachelor's degree work in Mechanical, Industrial or Electrical Engineering/Engineering Technology, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for educational requirements. Virginia Department of Education Provisional teaching license as a Mechatronics CTE Instructor with endorsement code 7200 Technology Education, 8425 Electronic Technology, or 8541Industrial Robotics preferred. Experience in controls, CAD/CAM, factory automation, and/or systems integration and/or working with a diversity of hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical/electronic, and PLC equipment in a manufacturing setting desired.
