Position Overview: Gardner-Webb University is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Assistant Provost, reporting to the Provost, and a key member of the Provost's leadership team.

The Assistant Provost leads efforts in fostering student success, faculty development, and curriculum excellence that measurably support the university's strategic plan. The Assistant Provost extends the reach and presence of the Provost, serving as a front-line resource and directly supports students, faculty, administration, and functions of the Provost's Office.

The Assistant Provost provides high-level, comprehensive, and confidential advice and assistance to the Provost on a broad range of academic and administrative issues both internal and external to the campus requiring the exercise of judgment and independent initiative. The Assistant Provost works closely with the Provost to develop, implement, and administer academic policies, processes, and programs.

The Assistant Provost fosters assessment, continuous improvement, student well-being, curricular innovation and implementation, and other high-impact practices by regularly interfacing with GWU constituencies. The Assistant Provost provides tactical leadership in the day-to-day operations of academic functions including course scheduling, faculty teaching workloads, academic standards, and serving as the final adjudicator of student appeals regarding academic concerns and/or the administration of academic policy.

Responsibilities: The Assistant Provost is a 12-month administrative position with no teaching expected and manages all daily functional operations of the Provost's Office, under the direction of the Provost, acting as the first point of contact, including but not limited to:

Curriculum Development: Collaborate with Colleges/School on processes and assessment data to ensure alignment with disciplinary and community and industry needs and emerging trends. Actively support faculty to foster excellence in course and program-level assessment, data collection, curriculum review, and reporting.

Faculty and Staff Support: Ensure faculty support through oversight and enhancement of activities in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), sabbatical process, yearly P&T process, annual contract preparation, faculty awards process, annual faculty evaluation process, student feedback survey process, Assessment Day, and staff issues.

Strategic Support: Ensure support of key initiatives through management of strategic plan updates, academic course schedule reviews, day-to-day problem-solving including the areas of Registrar, Library, Student Success, Honors Program, Webb in Washington, Undergraduate Research, CETL, Study Abroad. Manage the building manager and the academic activities on the Charlotte campus

Engagement: Foster student engagement through data collection on academic efforts to collaborate with practitioners, organizations, and community/industry professionals to help students gain practical experience through high impact practices such as internships, student-engaged research projects, study abroad, and partnerships.

Budget Oversight: Ensure equitable, responsible use of resources in the areas of faculty pre-travel and development, oversight of GA assignment with Graduate Dean, facilities requests, workload, overload and stipend reporting and monitoring, and budget expenditures and approvals under $2500.

Service: Serve on various committees within academic affairs and/or at the institutional level.

These committees may be related to curriculum development, student affairs, shared governance, or administrative decision-making. Appoint Provost representatives to committees, in consultation with Provost; review academic catalog and faculty handbook; work in collaboration with HR to facilitate search committees in academic affairs; serve as Provost representative at ceremonies, as needed; manage academic affairs ceremonial events.

Enrollment: Support enrollment initiatives through such activities as serving as liaison with Marketing and Enrollment areas; monitor and suggest changes to the website academic pages.

Accreditation: Manage SACSCOC efforts, in collaboration with Provost, and ensure accreditation efforts of externally accredited programs; manage internal program reviews.

Manage special projects and other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited university.

  • Successful, full-time, previous higher education teaching experience and demonstrated commitment to excellence in pedagogy.

  • Successful previous higher education administrative experience in a role such as Chairperson, Dean, Assistant Vice President, or Assistant Provost.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with senior administrators, colleagues, students, and community partners.

  • Highly developed emotional intelligence and polished executive presence.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative abilities and attention to detail.

  • Credentials and professional activity that qualifies candidate for the rank of Associate Professor or above

  • Ability to work in a transparent and cooperative manner in support of the mission of Gardner-Webb University
